Problem with Windows Movie Maker

Solved

Hello everyone,
please confirm whether I am in the right forum or kindly redirect me.
Here is my problem:

After "editing" the project in Video Maker, I can't save a video (composed of photos and written titles) to my hard drive.
When I finish editing the video and click on save the video, the saving process starts for about 10 minutes and then I receive the following message:
"Unable to complete the video saving wizard. The video saving has failed. Windows Movie Maker cannot save the video to the specified location. Please check that the original source files used in the video and the saving location are still available and that there is sufficient disk space, then try again."

This is my first time using Movie Maker and I'm not very good with computers.
If anyone sees a solution that would allow me to save this video to my hard drive, thank you for your help.

What does it mean: check that the original source files used in the video are still available and that there is sufficient disk space????
Thank you in advance for your help.
Note that I have also downloaded "TMP GNC" to later convert the video file (once saved on the hard drive) to MPEG so that I can watch and hear it on a home DVD player.
For your information, I have a CD burner on my PC and no DVD burner.
Thank you again.

Hello. Having the same problem as Alain, I tried to save my video in DV AVI as advised, but when I start the recording, I immediately receive an error message saying that Windows Movie Maker has to close. Can someone help me?

Indeed, I encountered the same problem as you all, and having the format set to DV AVI PAL solves the recording issue, but it takes up a lot of disk space. However, I plan to convert the file later to make it less bulky. Nonetheless, I want to emphasize that Microsoft still has improvements to make on their software... I’m considering switching to another one because I don’t want to waste time recording, then recompressing, etc., while I'm already spending time on my creations. In short, the best solution is to use software other than this one, and that's it.

Hello,

I encountered a problem with Windows Movie Maker (on XP, as I gave up trying to get anything to work on Vista) during the recording phase, which many people experience:

"Windows Movie Maker cannot save the video to the specified location. Please check that the original source files used in the video and the save location are still available and that there is enough disk space, and then try again."

After reading the solutions proposed by the forum, I wanted to specify the one that worked for me:

- I first checked that it was indeed my project that was causing the problem (a ten-minute film with many clips and a huge amount of video effects, titles, etc.). So I created a test project with a few photos and a short film. At that point, there were no issues saving, regardless of the chosen format. So it was indeed my project that was causing the problem, not Windows Movie Maker in general.

- I tried again to save my project and looked at what point it crashed (for me, at 7%). I then looked at which clip in my project corresponded to that 7% of video time. I deleted that clip from my project and tried saving again. (In my case, two files were problematic, so I had to repeat this manipulation twice). Once the questionable files were removed, saving worked, regardless of the chosen format.

In my case, the two problematic files were .flv files that I had converted to wmv using "Power MP4". However, I had 3 files of this type in my project, and only two caused problems.

Since I still absolutely wanted to include these files in my project, I retrieved the .flv files again and converted them back to wmv (but this time with "Super"). I put them back in my project, and this time they did not cause any issues.

I hope this can help some of you.

I did like you, and after 1 hour of waiting, it worked except that for some reason, it was already in wmv, but it didn't work, so I converted it with quickmediaconverter to AVI, I replaced it, and it worked,
Thanks^^

Yep

Hey, but how do we see at 7%, for example in your case?

anissa52

Yep. Well, normally when you record your video, you can see how much it is on the right, for example: 7%

Hello
I am going to put an end to all these forums that talk about problems with Windows Movie Maker.
The following procedure will solve all the issues
1) Uninstall Windows Movie Maker
2) Turn off your PC for at least 2 minutes
3) Turn your PC back on
4) Download Windows Movie Maker
5) During the download, press CTRL+ALT+W
6) When the download is finished (especially do not launch Windows Movie Maker), move Windows Movie Maker to your C: drive (Windows C:n / drive C:) which is located in "Computer"
7) Launch Windows Movie Maker from the C: drive and then close it after 2 minutes
8) Move Windows Movie Maker wherever you want
9) Turn off your PC
10) Turn your PC back on

!!!AND THERE YOU GO!!!!!
There will be no more bugs or problems

Good evening.. working with video requires a lot of space, it is recommended to install a second hard drive dedicated solely to it.... and it is preferable to buy a DVD burner.... the more you compress a video, the more it loses quality, of course...

Good evening everyone, I had the same problem as you
I uninstalled the K-Lite Codec Pack and installed DivX Pro as the codec and it works for me, hopefully it can solve yours
see you+

Hi,

Well, I followed your instructions... unfortunately without success. Despite installing the DivX Pro codec, the problem persists...
Thanks anyway for the tip as it seems that the K-Lite pack is responsible for some video bugs anyway...

So I'm still open to another solution.

See you later.

Hello,

I don't know much about Movie Maker, I'm just here to share how we managed to troubleshoot a problem similar to yours, in case it might help you.

So, after creating a video with WMM, we received a message similar to the one Alain got (see the first message in the thread).

We tried uninstalling Service Pack 2 for XP unsuccessfully.

We then downloaded SP2 from here: http://telecharger.yacapa.com/telechargement/Les+Incontournables/Windows+XP+SP2-1287.html

and reinstalled it without uninstalling the previous version.
After that, Movie Maker worked, except for larger compositions, where it seems that the hard drive, despite having a large amount of available space, becomes saturated. This may come from (I suppose, but I'm not sure) the fact that the video editing is perhaps initially created entirely uncompressed, which takes up a lot of space on the disk, before being compressed to become a more "reasonable" sized file.
If that's the case, the solution would be to split the overly large project into several smaller "sub-projects," generate the files one by one, and then assemble them afterward. There are several free software available online that can perform this last operation (if Movie Maker doesn't do it?).

There you go, in case this might be useful to someone.
Have a nice day everyone
Alain

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as Alain!!! Unable to save the video after editing, same error message (see Alain's post)!! I've checked everything and it's not a problem with the source files. I think I have enough RAM (768 MB) and 9 GB free on the disk.....

I've gone through numerous forums on the subject: many messages about the same problem but NO responses that fix it. I've tried different types of recording quality, nothing works.....

So whoever provides THE answer to the problem truly deserves the gold medal for the "WMM problem solver"! In the meantime, I'm really hoping someone can help us, poor average users that we are, having spent hours on a video project that remains archived.....

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your response.

Indeed, for anyone encountering this issue, please try to restart your video and attempt to save at each step; you will easily see what is blocking. For me, it was the text I was adding because I was stretching it, which created gaps.

Good luck to everyone; I insist that for those who have this problem, just take the time to start a new edit while keeping the old one. That is to say, you make a new, very simple one, and at each step (adding 2 images or 2 videos), you try to save, then cancel if it goes through and continue (adding sound... adding text...

Then you will correct the error in your original video.

Good evening! I had exactly the same problem as you, kathy59. And I'm looking for a solution, and I must admit that I can't find one.
Did you manage to solve your problem, and if so, how did you do it? Because I must admit that I'm desperate!

I had this problem and I found the solution! You need to go to: "Display of the sequential montage table" which is located above where you put your videos on the timeline. From there, you place your videos in the squares that appear and it takes the image! I might not be explaining it very well.....

I think I found it; try the various methods suggested here: (especially the method of cutting the editing into several parts, or changing the size of the swap file)

https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/help/814836

hoping it will work for you too

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! I believe that despite the fact that it’s really much longer to cut your video into several parts to put them back together later, it’s worth it, because it worked.!! Finally

I found some answers on hardware.fr (http://forum.hardware.fr/hardwarefr/VideoSon/sujet-65764-1.htm). Using the DV-AVI format worked for me, but the result is enormous! 380 MB for 1'30'' of video! That's more than 5 times larger than the original video (I just wanted a clip) which lasts 35 minutes!
I also managed to get a result with the various "pocket video" formats, but they are much smaller and of significantly lower quality. Apparently, the displayed message might not have much to do with the real problem (of CODEC, rather?) that is causing this error. Here's a nice achievement by Mr. Windows... Too bad.

Hello, I have the same problem as Alain; he keeps sending me the same message, so I decided to follow one of the tips to convert to DV-AVI (PAL) and it works up to 24% and then it sends me the same message as before but later. So if anyone has a solution, please let us know ^^

Here it is!!!!!

I've found a solution for those struggling with the inability to save the movie maker file:

"i have found what everyone here has been looking for. google the term “Theorica Divx ;-) Codecs”. you’ll find a free package of all the codecs for your system to make anything and everything work. once you install it you'll get a small pop up window with some odd info on it. JUST X OUT THE WINDOW. if you hit ok it will uninstall all the work you just did and you'll have to do it again. no harm done, just annoying. another word of advice the file “ffdshow.ax” or something along those lines will cause movie maker not to work. use your windows search to find that exact file. once found delete all the components labelled “ffdshow” and everything should work like a swiss watch. happy movie making "

there you go, the theorica codec download works, however, I didn't delete the ffdshow files, as they were of no use to me!!
SPREAD THE WORD IF IT WORKS!

Thank you for the info on the Théorica codecs: it works great! You've taken a huge weight off my shoulders! Movie Maker gives me new problems every day, but thank goodness, with all the tips left by people in the forums, I'm managing to make it work! Once again, a VERY BIG THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, like many people, I had a problem saving my Movie Maker, so I just read all the magic solutions proposed and also the famous theoretical codecs that work for many people... except for me. I installed a pack, but then my question is:
once the pack is installed, what do I do? I go back to Movie Maker and press save again and magically it saves, or do I need to do something with the codecs beforehand??
Oh, thank you for answering me, I can't take it anymore trying to figure out why and how to save
thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been 2 months since I've been trying unsuccessfully to save a movie project on WMM. Yesterday, I downloaded the "theorica divx," but it didn't change the problem.
I'm experiencing the same issues as everyone else who has dealt with this hassle. I'm on Vista, does that make a difference?
Thank you!!!

Hello, I've been looking through all your questions/answers for a while but I can't find a solution.
I have a problem with Windows Movie Maker; I made a video (quite short, 1:23) and saved it as a project.
I want to publish a movie so that the format is WMV so that my video can be accepted on sites like Google or YouTube.
But I always get the same error message when I publish this movie (here's the error message: Unable to complete the video recording wizard. The video recording failed. Windows Movie Maker cannot save the video to the specified location. Please check that the original source files used in the video and the save location are still available and that there is enough disk space, then try again.)

It's quite frustrating...
Can someone help me?!!

:D

Hello,

I have the same problem except that my computer shuts down at 10%. I don't want to attempt the process multiple times to see which video is not good because I'm afraid of damaging my computer. I think my project might be too large (16 minutes in total), but in that case, what should I do? All the videos in my project are necessary. If there's no solution, I'll have lost a day of video editing and I'll be almost certain that Windows Live Movie Maker is really just crap, to be polite.

Thank you in advance if you have a solution.

Hi everyone!
I had the same recording issue, and after banging my head against the wall for hours, I finally found a solution!
First of all, what you need to know is that my document was very simple (music + 3 images), but despite that, it crashed.
So what I did was convert my music to mp3 instead of keeping it in wav, which made it lighter.
I tried to save it, and oh magic! No more error message.

To convert, I used FormatFactory, a really handy software that converts all formats (I recommend it!)

Have a great day, everyone!

I don't have exactly the same problem, but I do have a problem
which is that Windows Movie Maker isn't doing anything anymore. This is already the second time I've used it, but the first time it didn't do that, so I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any idea why??

Hello Alain,
I saw your message and I'm currently having exactly the same problem with Movie Maker 2. I've already downloaded an update using the Microsoft update service, but the issue remains unchanged. In fact, it's worse now because I can't read the texts I've added to my photo montage. Have you found the solution in the meantime? Otherwise, is there anyone else who could respond to me? If I uninstall SP2 and reinstall it, do you think that could be a solution (without uninstalling the update service, it tells me I already have it) because I think I'm missing some DLL components. Thanks, guys (and girls...but I haven't seen many here...why???)
