Windows Movie Maker Registration Issue

Good evening everyone,
I'm in complete distress and urgently looking for someone who could come to my rescue!
I made a video montage using Windows Movie Maker that lasts 41 minutes and recounts my mother's trip to Canada. I want to gift it to her for her birthday in two days and I have FINALLY finished it! But now... DISASTER. When I tried to save the project on my computer to convert it into a regular video file, it didn't work... It first asks me for the name I want to give the file, then the location (so far, so good). On the next page, I check "optimal quality" which is already set by default. But when I click one last time on "next", a bar (which is supposed to fill up) doesn't fill up even though it says "saving in progress" just above! And after a few seconds, everything stops and an error message appears saying that the saving failed.
Here is the exact message I receive:
Could not finish the Video Saving Wizard
Video saving failed.
Windows Movie Maker cannot save the video to the specified location. Please check that the original source files used in the video and the location are still available and that there is enough disk space, then try again.
I have tried restarting several times but nothing works, it's always the same thing... I'm starting to worry and think that all these hours of work (I've worked on about 300 videos...) have been for nothing! Not to mention that I have no gift anymore...
So I'm appealing to your help because I am completely stuck!
Thank you in advance for your help :)

Hello, so if you have Windows 7 do you have "Windows Live Movie Maker" or the old "Windows Movie Maker"? The former is compatible with your AVCHD camera format, which would have simplified things.
AVI is not a codec but a "container" (see online) that can hold a multitude of codecs, some of which are not compatible for editing, such as AVI DivX, Xvid.
Next, to edit in HD you need a powerful machine and you haven't provided the specifications (config) of your PC.
It's the power of your computer that could be an issue.

Hi,
did I understand your problem?
When you do a project, you must not move the original files, because it's not the film that's saved, it's only the commands in the project
and they provide a path to find the videos to be edited
Maybe you can try restarting your project from the original videos and then burn the film from the project. Once the film is burned, you can safely delete the project
but never delete your original videos; Movie Maker sometimes has bugs.

Hello, and very well for Geerco2's response. We will look for a cause and a solution together.
Let's try a short part of the project.
Then we need to provide as many clues as possible.
The computer configuration.
The source of the films to be processed: DV or HD camera brand?
The destination of the film: HD, SD, DVD, or web (YouTube)?
The choice of export format.
And all the clicks you make on which option to save and publish the final file.

Hello,
First of all, thank you for caring about my problem, it's really nice of you! Then when you say “original videos”... I'm not sure if it could come from there, but the original videos, that is to say directly from the camera, were not in a format compatible with WMM: AVCHD (.MTS). So I converted them to AVI before importing them into my project. But the AVI videos haven't moved at all!
As for the clues:
I'm on Windows 7
The films I'm working with come from a SONY HD camera
My film will only be viewed on a computer or at worst put on a USB stick to be watched on a TV, but nothing more... No DVD, and no publication on the web.
For the export format, I want it to be in AVI, but WMM doesn't give me the option when saving... At no point does it ask me what format I want to save my project in, it automatically sets it to wmm.
After clicking on “save on my computer” in the “finish the video” section, a window appears asking for the name I want to give my video file, the location I assign. I then click on “next” and (already checked by default) it says “Optimal quality” or “Other options”, I of course leave it on optimal quality... and click on next again! And there's no new page asking me for the desired format, just the download bar that doesn’t even start and the error message a few seconds later...
I hope my information is clear and that it can help you! :P

I have the same problem.
I enjoy creating small video montages (no longer than 5 minutes) and I always get this message that annoys me.
Yet my PC has enough memory and is "powerful."
I have another program for making HD videos but it’s really not practical, however, it saves well....
A little help would be appreciated, and if I find a solution, I’ll let you know too.

Hello, the post is old, please renew your request in your own words and also:
How to know the power of your computer which is "crucial" for HD editing of the new indigestible video formats
so always provide the "configuration" of your computer:
The type of OS: Windows XP, Seven, 8 or Mac, 32 or 64 bits
the type of processor, e.g.: quad core 2500k
the RAM (4GB, 8GB)
For this, go to "Control Panel", "System and Security" and "System"
the hard drive capacity in GB and its speed 5400 or 7200rpm
For this, right-click on `C: drive`, "Properties"
the type of graphics card, go to:
"Device Manager"
One thing, make a summary of your "config", save it in a folder and when you have the request, select it and paste it automatically in the post
And finally, provide the type of video hardware you use (brand, number if possible), the export format (e.g.: mpeg2 mp4) and the desired resolution (e.g.: hd1920x1080) and what you expect from us as a response
Best regards

Good evening.. I had the same problem...
I searched.. Searched... Searched... And searched again...
And I found the simplest solution...
Run a disk cleanup with Ccleaner.. ;)
I may be a bit late, but this will help others :)

Hello everyone;
according to my experience, if you encounter a recording problem with your video, first you need to save your project on your computer (on the "desktop" for example) (File --> save project as...) then completely close "Windows Movie Maker", then open the project you saved on the desktop and in the "finish video" section click on 'save to my computer' and there you go
Good luck
