I can’t open Word file >512MB

Hello and thank you all for the advice.

It's a Word 2007 file. I didn't pay attention to the file size before it refused to open.

Open/Repair doesn't work, it gives the same error message.

With OpenOffice I get a small file with text in disarray. All the photos have disappeared and there were many that I risk not to find elsewhere.

I hope you didn’t spend tens of hours creating a file over 512 MB without making numerous intermediate saves with different names at the various stages of your work, as well as backups on other media, CD or USB stick? Likewise you surely downloaded or transferred your photos into one or more files, from which you worked on these photos to modify their dimensions and to compress them before incorporating them into the document? If, by extraordinary chance, you hadn’t done any of that, you still have a glimmer of hope: go to the folder containing this hypertrophied file, where you right-click/Restore previous versions, hoping there is at least one previous version available...

I replied yesterday but apparently either my post was deleted, or there was a... problem?

I was saying that since it is already a 2007 file, the format is compressed, modular XML.

From there, it should become possible to recover something. To do that, you need to start by changing the extension to ZIP, then open the ZIP, extract the document, as well as the multimedia files (images).

512 MB? Are you sure? That’s huge!!!
If it’s really MB, I don’t even know how you could end up creating a file that big...

The bigger it is, the more likely it is to become corrupt... Try Open with the Open and Repair feature (in Word's Open dialog).

Do Cut/Copy of all your illustrations to another file.
Replace all your WordArt insertions with text.
If that’s not enough, split your document into 2 or 3 files.
How many pages do you have currently?
