Choppy sound with Ubuntu on VirtualBox

Hello,

I am running Ubuntu with VirtualBox on a Mac OSX host system.

I have a persistent problem with stuttered/static audio output, and I can't find any solutions through online forums.

I’ve tried the following:
- I installed the "Additions" in Ubuntu (notably to have the full screen available), but that doesn't change anything.
- My VirtualBox is up to date.
- In the audio preferences of VirtualBox, changing the "audio controller" or "host audio driver" does not resolve the issue, and it even cuts off the sound completely.
- Adjusting the volumes in Ubuntu/Mac/internal software (YouTube, Rhythmbox, etc.)

If you have any ideas...
Thank you greatly for your help...

Configuration: Linux / Firefox 3.6.8

    Hi there!
First of all, it might come from the virtual machine: if the computer isn't powerful enough, then it stutters.

On Ubuntu, have you set up the sound options correctly? It could be related to Pulse Audio: the software that manages sound on GNU/Linux.

Thanks to the remarks from the Flying Dutchman, I remembered that I had allocated more RAM to the guest system than what VirtualBox provided by default. In fact, I allocated too much, and as a result, the host system didn't have enough to run the sound properly. By changing the allocated memory (in VirtualBox preferences), it no longer crackles!

I set 512 MB of RAM (instead of the 1024 MB I had set) on my total of 4 GB of RAM

Thanks a lot to the Flying Dutchman for putting me on track regarding the insufficient power of the host computer!
