Using different brands' powerline adapters?

Hello, I currently have a pair of LEA netplug turbo ethernet 85mbps adapters (sorry, I can't remember if I have the exact reference), which I got at the same time as my SFR box and are used for television.
I would like to have internet on a PS3 to enjoy multiplayer, so I want to use another powerline adapter but this time from a different brand, a Netgear XET1001.

- Will just buying another adapter from a different brand work, or do I necessarily need to buy a pair from the same brand or model?
- If so, will I need to configure anything or will it simply be enough to plug it in for it to work (because networking isn't really my thing)?
- Will the connection be smooth, without lag for playing online with a PS3 (especially for fighting games like SSF4, Blazblue), or should I abandon the idea of using powerline adapters?

Thank you in advance to those who take the time to answer my questions.

Hello,
Better late than never, some info, just in case:
  • For online "war" games "HiTech", the ideal is to connect directly via Ethernet, i.e. with the RJ45 cable from the ADSL Box to the PC. (avoid WiFi, or even powerline adapters which have some latency, meaning a response delay)
  • However, for other games, like poker, car games, etc., it doesn't pose any particular problem.

Different brands of powerline adapters, I also had the same problem and solved it :
I had 2 powerline adapters of 200 Mbit/s: Devolo dLAN200 AVmini (purchased in July 2011) which worked very well until September 2015. I bought an additional 500 Mbit/s Devolo WiFi dLAN500 powerline adapter in October 2015: it integrated well and synchronized with the other 2 powerline adapters. (I never downloaded their Devolo Cockpit software, it was not necessary for me).

Moreover, the overall speed of my network is limited by the slowest powerline adapter, which is 200 Mbit/s, which is more than sufficient for me: FreeBox ADSL subscription 20M/s (measured speed of 6 to 19Mb/s), 1xTV box, 1xPC wired via RJ45 to the Box and 1 to 2 PCs via WiFi).

Problem: 1 month later, it starts to crash more and more, I press the reset, encryption, re-sync buttons on the 3 powerline adapters: nothing works. After manipulations, it's my 2x dLAN200 powerline adapters, 4 years old, that start to malfunction due to overheating.

Disappointed, I replace them with cheaper 500 Mbit/s: Boulanger EssentielB 2xCPL Duo500 (and I keep my recent and high-performance Devolo WiFi powerline adapter). The 2x Boulanger powerline adapters synchronize directly without issue. But despite their recent HomePlug standard, and the compatibility documentation stating Boulanger & Devolo = synchronization not possible, despite hours pressing the reset/init, encryption, synchronization buttons, etc.!
So I saw on a forum that only a true reset of my Devolo will make it "virgin" and thus compatible with my 2x Boulanger powerline adapters, but that this is only possible with the provided Devolo software! So I download the Devolo Cockpit software, update it (Boulanger software ignored) with my PC.
  • I unplug my 2x Boulanger powerline adapters
  • I recreate a Devolo network (need more than 2 powerline adapters) with my CPL500 wifi AND my old dLAN200 before it overheats too much!
  • OK, the Cockpit software "sees" my 2 powerline adapters: via settings, I check "Re-Init (Reset)" of my dL500 WiFi, then check "Leave the Network."
  • I unplug everything, I reconnect my 2x Boulanger powerline adapters: using their button I re-encrypt each one (8 sec). [Not the 15 sec reset!] : OK both work and communicate with each other.
  • I reconnect my Devolo dL500 wifi to this and encrypt it via its button... and it works!

My network: 2x Boulanger powerline adapters & 1x Devolo wifi powerline adapter works perfectly. That's my case!

Important:
  • If the powerline adapters are of the HomePlug standard but old version v1, or if they are old models of about over 5 years, or rated for 85 Mbit/s... it won't work! So buy a kit of 2x powerline adapters, or 1 powerline adapter + 1 wifi powerline adapter, etc., preferably of the same brand!
  • Encryption: must be the same on all powerline adapters in the network, but the most common is WPA2, AES128 Bits. This is set by default on the powerline adapters, so usually, there's nothing to change on that side.
  • In my opinion, in 2015, it's better to avoid buying powerline adapters that are too fast, i.e. over 650Mb, which is more than fast enough for 95% of standard applications (e.g., 1 ADSL Box, 1 TV, 2 PCs), because these are more sensitive to interference from the power sector and the quality of the 220v wiring, grounding, outlets, etc..

Thank you for this conclusion.

Same, better late than never:
Thank you very much for taking the time to do the recap. It's quite clear.

Thanks for the information, it's really practical even in 2023 :)

I was wondering about an old pair of powerline adapters that I recycled for an office further away in my house. I wanted to see if I could extend the network with a new socket, I at least have the information I need for my research, thanks!
