Hello everyone!

I need your advice regarding laptops and their batteries. It turns out that I bought a laptop about a month ago (Dell Inspiron 1100, 2.4 GHz, 256 MB of RAM and 30 GB HDD) and right now I'm having a big issue with my battery. In the manual, it says exactly, “If the battery status light is orange and flashes rapidly, the battery may be defective,” and that's a bit what's happening: the light flashes quickly 4 times in orange and then turns green on the fifth time. It's the same whether the laptop is running on battery or plugged in. Normally, when running on AC, the light should display a constant green color; it was like that at first, but for about a week now, I've had this periodic flashing: so 4 rapid orange flashes and one green flash then back to 4 rapid orange flashes and one green flash... and so on for eternity.

I really need your views on this topic because it's my first laptop, and I really need it. Thank you!

I'm afraid the problem may be common to many Dell laptops.
Personally, I had a battery that was recalled due to the Sony battery issue.

The new one (3 months old) doesn't work (we regularly end up with the red battery light indicating a dead battery periodically). I have the impression that it's a mechanical problem related to wear on the battery charging contacts (by removing and then reinserting the battery, it sometimes charges) but I'm not sure. Before the battery recall, I used to remove my battery when I was on AC power and everything worked fine.

My laptop is just over a year old (a D810) and I have a 3-year on-site warranty. So I'm going to send it back to Dell.
I'm generally disappointed with the quality of this equipment. I was told that Dell made good machines, but I feel like it's mostly marketing and advertising.
The performance is not great, the machine is heavy, reliability is lacking, and support is complicated. When you need to quickly change a part, you can't even go to a store to buy one!

I have to add that I thought about contacting Dell, but since it was an acquaintance who sold me the machine, I preferred to forget that option. The worst part is that I only received the machine with its battery and the power adapter (no CD, no manual [I actually had to get it from the internet]). I was in need, I had in front of me a P4 for 610 euros, I couldn't demand anything else. Moreover, it wasn't even the person who sold me the laptop who bought it. He just told me that the machine was new, and looking at it, there was nothing suspicious.

Here is the situation. What can I do?

I'm afraid you are right! Clearly, it's just advertising because a dead battery after less than 6 months is more than disappointing. Anyway! For now, I'm managing with what I have. My battery life has dropped to less than 10 minutes and as if that wasn't enough, right now I can only work while plugged in because it doesn't even charge anymore. So if by chance I unplug it, it just stops dead. It has done this to me before; I removed the battery, left it outside, and the next day it could charge again. I hope that this time it will do the same thing for me. Well, it's up to it to decide.

I noticed that my battery needed to be changed, I received a new battery very very quickly...

but this battery doesn't work!!!
No signs of operation... indeed I think there are contact issues due to the old battery made by Sony.

In short, old battery changed due to malfunction, new battery that doesn’t work at all!!
What should I do, I normally have to return the faulty battery (but at least it lasts 10 minutes, I don't want to send it back!!)

I solved it by turning on my laptop on battery power, and when it went into sleep mode because the battery was empty, I plugged it back into the power source and hallelujah, no more blinking light 4 times orange and 1 time green. I can't guarantee anything for other laptops, but it worked for mine. THIEUME

Hello,
I also have the same issue "battery light blinking" (Dell D160), but I fixed it 3 minutes ago!!
I followed the steps below (thanks to the previous post):

1/ PC turned off - Remove the battery from its slot
2/ Plug the laptop into a power source
3/ Turn on the PC
4/ Reinsert the battery once the Windows session is open.

There might be more academic or simpler ways, but this method worked for me
So I hope this helps you, it's true that this orange blinking x 4 - green is very annoying.

Hello,
I also have the same battery problem, I have an Inspiron 8500, I bought a new battery and still have this blinking issue along with an error message during the boot sequence, "AC power adapter type cannot be determined", the laptop sends me back to the BIOS and of course I don't have the password to change the configuration.

I have tried all your methods but nothing works.
If someone has a solution, thank you in advance.

I think your problem is different from mine because I have no startup issues except for this annoying blinking of the charge indicators. I’ve had this problem twice and resolved it each time by following the previously mentioned steps. Have you tried starting your laptop on battery power? Logically, with a new battery, there shouldn't be any issue. The problem might come from your power adapter, which doesn't seem to be recognized anymore. If you know someone who has the same adapter as you, you should try using it (be very careful, as not just any adapter will work with any laptop, so make sure to check the specifications of your adapter before plugging it in, or you risk frying your PC). Otherwise, make sure that your battery is compatible with your laptop.
What happens if you reconnect the old battery (does the message come back or not)?
If the message doesn't come back, then you have a problem with your new battery.

you confirm my thoughts, I had a doubt about the transformer, the "power adapter not recognized" message appears for me too if I start without the battery, so I also think it's the charger and not the battery that has a problem.

It's impossible to start on the battery because it's completely dead.

I have one more question, on a Dell laptop motherboard, how do you clear the BIOS? I've turned mine every which way and I couldn't find either a battery or a jumper???

Hi Zorg
when it comes to hardware, I'm not a star, but I just saw on a Dell forum that you can press F12 at startup to choose whether to enable or disable the BIOS.
If you purchased your laptop from Dell, you can contact them to get the admin password.
Otherwise, with this link http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet 587 lost password reset the bios, you might be able to access your BIOS.

I had the same problem and thanks to a colleague, Monji, who had the same issue on his DELL Latitude 510 D, we resolved the problem by resoldering the power input connector on the motherboard as well as the coil;
Please note that to access these components, you need to remove more than thirty screws.
What is shocking is that DELL support doesn't even mention this problem, which is common in this range; at least 4 PCs that our company procured in 2005 have had this defect.
