Atheros Ethernet: What is it used for?

Hello,
Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.6.3
By chance, while looking for how to access the detailed config of my PC, I see something that catches my attention ^^
In device manager, network adapters I have
- 1394 network adapter (Connected)
- RangeMax (tm) Next Wireless Adapter WN311B (connected)
- Atheros AR8121/ AR8113/ AR8114 / PCI-E Ethernet Controller (Disconnected with a red cross on it)
Atheros? Is that my Ethernet card? Why is it disconnected? Is it important?
