Hello,
When I launch WinXP, all the icons do not appear every time in the Systray (the icons at the bottom right next to the clock). Often some are missing, and it is not always the same ones that are missing.
However, the program or process is indeed launched and active.
For example, the (great) program PopUpKiller is launched at startup of my Windows via the "run" parameter in the registry. Every time I start, the program is indeed launched, there are no misses. However, one time out of three, the icon does not appear. This is annoying because it is through clicks on this icon that you can act on the program's behaviors, such as temporarily disabling it.
So my question is, "what causes a program or process to show or not show an icon in the systray?"
Thanks, you experts ........ Claude

I found a solution for my home!
Apparently, it's a fairly common problem with multiple possible causes, but that is mostly related to the timing of service startup during boot. Here is a site in English that addresses the topic from top to bottom: https://winhlp.com
The solution that worked for me is the one called "Okuni’s solution" on the site in question. It involves disabling the icon indications for UPnP devices on the network. To do this, go to "Network Favorites" and in the left menu click on "Hide UPnP network device icons". And that's it. For me, after the next restart, no more disappearing systray icon issues. Of course, this solution only works if the option to display UPnP devices is enabled so that you can disable it!
Hoping this is helpful to you!
Cheers!

Hello everyone, from a "Newbie"
I'm surprised that for 2 years no one has provided a valid solution to this problem.
Sorry to bring this up again, I have the same issue, and no response.
Note that if I stop the process in the task manager, and then restart it, at that moment the icon is visible in the systray!
Any ideas?

Exactly the same problem. I think it’s due to the installation of one of my services, but I'm not completely sure. It’s quite annoying especially since it’s not always the same icons that disappear. Usually, if I kill one of the processes whose icon is not displayed and then restart it, the icon appears!
Of course, the more additional services that are installed (I have 16 icons in the systray), the more likely it is that one is missing! However, I thought a computer was a rigorous machine, and that for a given action, it would provide a given result; yet every time it starts up, the services don’t start in the same order, and therefore the icons don’t end up in the same place. That said, I found a utility, STARTUPDELAYER, that allows you to set the startup order and the delay before launching. Because I think that depending on how long it takes for the service to initialize, it overlaps with the execution of the following programs and the bugs from Microsh*t do the rest... But well, no elegant solution. Cheers!
Thank you BernardHuf for "waking up" the topic that had been dormant for 2 years.
Since then, I have changed my computer and I no longer face the issue. I have also changed my residence, but that has absolutely no relevance. It is worth noting that I have not changed my wife, whom I love dearly, but that doesn't stop her from continuing to think that I flirt too much with my computer (that I spend too much time on it)!!!!
However, I would have liked to understand the why and how of the random functioning of the systray.
I am always open to a knowledgeable person.... Claude

Thank you Dready,
The site you mentioned is really excellent, although it’s in English.
Now I "think" I understand how the systray display works. Once you grasp how it works, you can better address how to fix it.
What I understood is that this happens when the systray service program launches after those whose icons disappear.
As mentioned on the site, it’s mainly the sound icon that was disappearing, as well as the "popupkiller" icon.
I’m marking the issue as resolved, because as stated on the site, even M$ doesn’t respond to it….
Best regards to all ..... Claude

Hello everyone,
I'm noting down how my problem was solved here. It might help some of you.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Search for "SSDP Discovery Service", select the line by clicking on it, right-click, Properties
Then choose Startup type: Disabled and click on Stop below "Service Status" (if the button is clickable)
Close the windows and then restart the machine, the icons should display normally.

Finally, I found an answer to this problem: how to display the disappeared icons, including the battery icon. I did this
"To do this, go to "Network Favorites" and in the left menu click on "Hide UPnP network device icons""
Now everything is back to normal.

Startup Delayer 2.0.3 (http://www.jockersoft.com/english/startupdelayer_index.php has solved the intermittent icon issue for me.
Good evening
I know the post is old, but its participants seem to be well aware of the icon issues.
Here is my problem: on a Siemens Amilo running XP that was working fine until now, we can no longer access the internet by clicking on the icons of Firefox or IE8.
I recreated shortcuts on the desktop with no success.
I ran AVAST, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and found nothing.
Internet is working because it works with the shortcuts for Skype, MSN, and Outlook.
Do you have any ideas
Thank you in advance

I saw that you recreated the shortcuts... but you can try this:
To start with, basically, you can go to the following directory: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" and double click on the "iexplore" icon. We will already see if it's an application problem. If the program launches, drag and drop the same icon onto the launch bar (at the bottom left).
If the program does not launch, we will assess the situation.

Hello everyone,
you should post your message on the forum for that
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/rginformatique/section%20virus/demofairesontmessage.htm
why?
for proofreading on Google of messages for those who are troubleshooting by themselves,
there are thousands doing it this way. there you go ;)
in my opinion.....

Hello!
So right-click on the Start button / properties
In the "Taskbar" tab of the window that opened, in the notification area section, you can customize the icons to hide/show: either always show, hide when inactive, or always hide.
I'll let you discover the rest
See you!

Hi,
You can manage the display of the system tray icons via:
right-click on the Start menu / Properties.
In the "Taskbar" tab, under the notification area section, if you check the "Hide inactive icons" option, you can then customize their display: always show, always hide, or hide automatically.
In your case, I think "hide automatically" is selected, so you should change your program's option to "always show".
There you go. See you!

See Fred's response just a bit further down.
Although disabling the display of network favorites can sometimes be a drawback. Of two evils, we must choose the lesser.
For my part, as I wrote, having changed computers, I am no longer faced with my problem from three years ago (already).
Thanks to this forum for shedding light on this bug.
Best regards.... Claude
