Backup fails on Windows 7

Hello,
Usually I always find a solution to my problems on this site, but I'm stuck here.
History
Asus PC bought in November: Vista with the option to upgrade to Win 7.
I've been on Win 7 since last Friday and everything went smoothly.
I made a backup of everything and it was perfect.
I reinstalled WinMail and everything is working great.
Today I notice that my backup from yesterday did not succeed.
I've tried several times but to no avail.
Who can help me please?
Here's the error message:
"Operation failed due to a device error that occurred at the source or destination level. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run chkdsk/R on the source or destination volume and try the operation again (0X8078012D).
Additional info: cannot perform the request due to an I/O device error (0X8007045D).
Help....no device connected and I don't understand anything about CHKDSK/R.
What's strange is that the first backup right after the installation worked.

I'm sorry, I haven't found a solution yet; I'm still on my first installation backup. -
In the "Computer" menu, right-click on the drive that will hold the backup. Click on Properties.
In the "Tools" tab, click on "Check Now..."
Your computer may need to restart. Do not interrupt it, and retry the backup afterwards.
P.S.: It might be simply that there isn't enough disk space, check ^^ -
I've already tried but it didn't change anything at all

The backup starts and stops every time at 57%
So I guess something is preventing this backup, but what? -
How many GB to save, on which disk? What capacity?
Personally, I made a backup and it worked well, but now it tells me "Windows could not find the backup disk."
When I check the settings, they are fine!!!
Start-->help-->enter "backup settings," it's not very clear.
If I understood correctly: you make a backup, then it updates that backup and from time to time it makes a complete backup again........ I hope the price of gigabytes (GB) goes down otherwise Mr. Bill is going to leave us broke..............

Here I am back, desperate
I still can't make a backup on my D drive
Well, I say that I'm not able to, but it did copy 47 gigabytes... which corresponds to the total to backup.
Just like earlier, the backup stops at 57%.
I don't understand anything, especially since the backup worked on an external drive

45 giga to save on drive D where there is 90 GB free
I would like to save on the internal D and on an external one. -
Can you create a partition of those 90GB? And only put the backup on it.

What I don't understand is that there is nothing on the D normally
I just reformatted it by the way and I'm going to try again
The backup fails but it indicates afterwards that it is used at 45 giga so there is indeed something. -
In the backup partition:
a folder of >16 bytes: WindowsImageBackup
Disk properties: 286GB used 110GB free.
Not knowing if all this stuff will be usable, I made a system repair DVD.
I think that also doing "create a system image wouldn't be a luxury.

I give up, I’ll reinstall Win 7 tomorrow
I have nothing to lose except Win Mail but I just set up Outlook so no worries
But what a mess! And on the Microsoft site and Win nothing nothing nothing

My drive is formatted in FAT32 ... I wonder if the backup doesn't work on NTFS? -
I also have a problem regarding the backup. I back it up and more or less after halfway it tells me that the backup has failed, that it could not be completed.
For your information, I have enough space on my hard drive: 254 GB.

You need to configure the backup. according to what you want to back up.
Start-->control panel-->system and security-->backup and restore-->configure backup.
The medium on which the backups will be made should preferably be another disk and the free space must be sufficient.
Don't forget to check at the same time that system restore points can be created (there is no indication that they are unavailable).
