Remove file association in Windows 7

Hello,
I mistakenly associated my “.nif” extension with the “Internet Explorer” application using that awful “open with” without unchecking “always”!

So now all my .nif files open with Internet Explorer

I'm looking to remove this association, but there's a big problem: I'm on Windows 7 and that famous folder options thing doesn't work!!!

How can I get back the previous “unknown application”?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Internet Explorer 8.0

    Hello.

    Start -> Run     , type regedit.exe

    Expand the branch
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.nif

    If there is a subkey named UserChoice , simply delete it.

      Or delete the value iexplore.exe contained within it.

      Thank you: I didn't remember it either. We don't know why they pre-checked the "always" option and haven't fixed this huge blunder for so long. It wasn't the case with XP, at least in the last versions.
      Anyway, Windows 7 brings nothing but complications compared to XP. If they had continued to develop a 64-bit XP, no serious user would be bothered with Seven. But I don't think it's still possible to get a 64-bit XP. That would be too good...

      It's exactly right, and thank you very much! I had the same problem with .ima files and Windows Explorer. The problem is resolved...

      It's still incredible that we have to tinker with the registry to delete a file association!!! I've been getting frustrated with this problem for an hour!

    Control Panel - Set default programs - select Internet Explorer - choose the default settings for this program and uncheck the box containing the unwanted format ^^. That should do it.

    I followed your instructions, but by deleting the entire folder, that is the .lnk, and it works :D

    Actually, what I noticed is that only the extensions associated with a program X appear in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\ tree, so I deleted it ^^

    I tried this:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.nif

    If there is a subkey named UserChoice, simply delete it.

    Then I also deleted the folder of my extension in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

    Well, it didn't work and now I no longer have the choice for this type of file!!!!!
