[WiFi NETGEAR] Speeds 54 Mbps !? Solved

Hello,

I had a Dell desktop PC running under XP SP3, with a Netgear WG311GT WiFi card (WiFi G 108Mbits/s). Everything was going well, I could almost fully utilize the 18 Mbits/sec of my Orange ADSL connection.

I changed my PC for a self-built configuration (details in my profile if needed). I wanted to reuse the same card as before, so I took it out and installed it: the problem was, it didn't detect any networks while the other PCs in my house were connected! So I bought a new card, the Netgear WG311v3 (WiFi G 54Mbits/s), I couldn't find the same one I had.

After installation, the card correctly detected my network, to my great relief! The only problem: I am limited to about 450 ko/s in download. Why? That's my question! I can't understand why it's impossible for me to go beyond 450 Ko/sec...

Even with a large file (battlefield 2 patch v1.5 of 1.9Go), I didn't exceed 460 Ko/sec... It took me nearly 2 hours to download, whereas before, with 1.5Mo/sec, a few minutes sufficed...

Help, I've been looking for hours, finding nothing...

EDIT: for information, I am with Orange 20Mbits/sec without Livebox, but with a Netgear DG834GT modem-router, and everything is configured correctly (no modifications compared to the configuration with my old WiFi card, except for the MAC address!)

Hello, I may have the solution: I think that your card isn't as powerful as the old one

for example: Vista was released after XP but it's still worse than XP

either there was a small bug with your router and it needs to be reset

I don't think it's a power issue with the card: my old one was at 108Mbits/s, this one is at 54Mbits/s. I agree it's slower, but with an ADSL speed of 18Mbits/sec, I should normally have no trouble downloading at over 450Ko/s (= 3.6Mbits/s)!

Resetting the router doesn't change anything: I wonder if there's some kind of throttling somewhere?

I take this opportunity to point out a weirdness: my router modem uses a WPA-PSK key in TKIP (configured by us) for connection authorizations. However, my card cannot connect using WPA-PSK TKIP; it connects with the same key, but configured in WPA2-PSK AES! Incomprehensible to me...

I use Windows management for wireless networks on my PC, because the Netgear utility cannot connect at all, even though it detects the network, whether in TKIP, AES, WEP, nothing at all...

In my opinion, for your problem, I think your router allows TKIP or AES and your card connects using the protocol it supports, which here is AES.

Have you done any basic bandwidth tests on the net to check your up/down? Don't you have any software downloading in the background or another PC that is hogging your bandwidth without you knowing? Are you uploading a lot? If so, stop the upload and redo a download test to see.

I did a test while being the only one connected to the network, and with no programs using the internet, I have the speeds announced in the first message: 7000 kbits/s (for 18000 allowed by my ADSL connection) in download, and 860 kbits/s in upload (1000 allowed by the connection).

In fact, the upload seems normal, it's the download that is really cut off..

Have you found a solution to your problem?
I have roughly the same issue but with a Hercules Wi-Fi key.
Instead of 8 megabytes in download, I am at about 1 megabyte. However, the upload remains normal at around 800 kb.
It seems like my key is capped at 1 megabyte, but why??? I've already tried changing the Wi-Fi channel; it worked for a while, but for the past few days, it hasn't.
However, for the first three minutes of connection, my speed is normal, then it drops and stays stable at 1 megabyte.
If someone can enlighten me. Thanks.

Replacing your Wi-Fi card may have reactivated the Ethernet card if there is one.

Check that this card is indeed disabled and perform a quick test on Ariase https://www.ariase.com/box/test-vitesse

To disable unnecessary cards, you need to go through the Device Manager or through Sharing and Network.

I tried another Wi-Fi key and the same problem occurred, so it doesn't come from that.
I specify that I had this problem with my old 8 mega + telephone offer.
By changing the Wi-Fi channel, I managed to resolve this issue and therefore had a stable speed of 8 mega all the time.
But since I changed my offer after the eligibility for total unbundling of my line, my problem has reappeared without me being able to resolve it by changing the Wi-Fi channel. This problem occurs whether the TV is on or off, and even if it is unplugged. Whether I have 8 mega available for the internet without the TV or 2 mega if I have the HD TV on, my speed is capped at 1 mega!
Can interference divide my speed by 8?
