FREEBOX TELEPHONY NO DIAL TONE Solved

Question

Hello,

I have had the Freebox since December with free access to local and national phone numbers. Everything was working perfectly until I lost the dial tone. I have rebooted several times in different ways, still nothing.
Has anyone else experienced this and were you able to fix the problem yourself? For my part, Free should handle the line, but still! I don't know what to do anymore.

Hello everyone,

So I had the same problem as Laurette: in fact, the internet was working perfectly and the Freebox was displaying the time normally, but for the phone there was no dial tone and those who called me went straight to my voicemail.
But thanks to the aduf site, I solved the problem: it came from the power supply (the kind of transformer that needs to be plugged into a wall outlet), so I took the specifications of mine and went to an electronics store to buy a new one, and miracle, that was it—the phone started working again. Since then, no more problems!

PS During all this time, Free never bothered to respond to any of my emails.

Bonjour, j'ai Free depuis le 1er février 2023 et je n'ai toujours pas de tonalité. Pourtant, mon téléphone fonctionne chez un ami freenaute. J'ai envoyé une dizaine de mails à Free et ils me disent toujours qu'ils vont régler le problème, mais rien ne change. Si vous avez trouvé une solution, faites-le moi savoir. Merci à l'avance.

Hello,I have been experiencing the same issue for over three weeks.I have called the Free hotline several times (€0.34/min), performed hardboot manipulations, and nothing has worked.They have added "persistent problem" to the file.I am sure it's because of the Freebox.I am thinking of filing a complaint and seeking damages.If anyone knows of a gathering of dissatisfied customers, I would be very happy to join them in their action.

I have the same problem for 15 days, internet is fine but Free phone has no dial tone,
Hard reboot, management console, phone crossover, second power supply, nothing works!
It's impossible to get assistance, they need to get their act together... it's unacceptable that they are not aware of all these malfunctions!!

Ah! Free's beautiful promises at €29.90/month all included! ALL included, no, not everything, actually there's a missing human customer service that's reachable like local France Telecom agencies, it also lacks the fact that Free is not the owner of the physical network, so they constantly shift the blame to their historical commercial enemy, there's no hotline where you don't pay when you're left waiting, there's no free cancellation!, there's a lack of user-friendly equipment where you don't have to unplug it 4 times and perform manipulations worthy of the Middle Ages of computing (like a reset button, for example), there's a lack of..., there's a lack of..., there's a lack of..., ... If you didn't understand anything about Free, it means everything is included. Well, I understand myself.  PS: The fact that people subscribed to Free end up asking for assistance on forums sums it all up.

I've been having the same issue for 2 days. I'm in a non-unbundled area and now I have no dial tone on my phone connected to the Freebox. However, I do have access to the Internet.
Has anyone solved this problem?

I've changed my phone, the filter... but still nothing.

Hello, Since this morning my Freebox is not working anymore (the loading animation is moving very slowly) so there’s no internet access and no phone!  And when I only plug my landline into the phone socket, there's no dial tone either...  Who is supposed to fix all this??? Free? France Telecom?? (I’m fully unbundled)

I have the same problem of no tone since today... and I find the solution very surprising. How is it possible that the Freebox works fine for internet and TV, but not for the phone just because of the transformer...
I'm going to test the solution but if someone could still explain...

Hello, I'm picking up the discussion from VANESSA three months late. I'm not going to give you miracle solutions; I've been with FREE like you for almost a year and I've faced the same difficulties. However, we should also consider the telephone installation you have. Maybe it's very old (mine was installed in 1962), and perhaps there is a legal recourse possible with the historical operator (to have them provide you with a new line throughout your building). Hello, there's nothing really new to teach you about FREE. I think you need a very good connection... (I’m particularly thinking about the electrical transformer of the ADSL box as well as the other HD box (each outlet with ground...)) and then occasionally do a heart reboot as FREE suggests. Since 2004, my Freebox has been working well, and since January 4th, there's no dial tone for calling from my Freebox line  I am on partial unbundling, I kept my France Telecom subscription  but I can no longer call from my Freebox line  I've hard rebooted and done a simple boot!!!! I just experienced the same problem as you: no more tone on a non-unbundled online fbx v4. So I sent an email through Free's support site and after 2 emails, they assured me that they would send me a transformer as soon as possible! I encourage you to do the same!

Same problem as you all, freebox powered on, internet, TV, but no dial tone on the phone.
On the Free chat, I'm told it's the power supply.
The original power supplies are made in China at minimal cost with cheap components, and after a few months, they go kaput.
Alright, without hesitating, I attach a TFT monitor power supply that I found in the basement: same voltage, same pin wiring, and this lovely thing delivers 4 Amperes at 12 Volts!
Perfect! It works, it doesn't overheat, pure joy! And now, my box has a switching power supply with regulated current and everything!

Hi,  At the beginning of February, I had the same problems as you all!!! No tone on the phone connected to the Freebox.  Then, a new symptom a few days later, no television (frozen on "Rock'n Roll")...  Then, a few days later, the synchronization issues started. So no internet at certain times (and since I work from home, this is no longer funny at all!).  Today I am starting to search for a solution. After reading about the problems you all encountered, I started looking for a freenaute among my acquaintances (thank you Alain!!) who was willing to lend me his transformer for a little test. That was done this evening, and the result was as significant as yours: no more connection issues, tone restored on the phone, and the television is working very well again!  So I will start searching for a brand new transformer tomorrow (since I had to return the borrowed one because they didn't want to do an exchange despite my insistence…).  P.S.: My transformer even started crackling this evening... I might be in an extreme case of this problem!!!  P.S.2: My Freebox is a v4 type and is exactly 2 years old (February 2006). Thank you all. For a month, I've been struggling with my phone on my Free service that has no dial tone. As you suggested, and with a lot of skepticism, I changed the power supply for the Free and MIRACLE, the phone works. How much time I wasted on the hotline without any progress with responses in pre-fabricated phrases, but no one ever mentioned changing my transformer. Maybe it’s necessary to provide a more powerful transformer, at least 1.5 A instead of the one provided by Free, which is 1.2 A.

I threw away my old rotary phone from the 70s because I thought it wasn’t working. With the new phone, I still have the same problem: no dial tone and I can hear the TV as an echo.  I tried to connect the phone directly to the back of the Freebox but it doesn’t work; I can make calls but I can’t hear the person on the other end... and when the phone is supposed to ring, it doesn’t ring.  The phone worked perfectly for over a year on my V5, so I don’t understand why it suddenly stopped, if anyone has an idea I’m all ears ;)

Storm continues over Lille, impossible to make calls with Freebox: no dial tone. Cannot call or be called. I am therefore contacting Free with my mobile: without success other than spending 40 EUR for nothing. Free customer service is terrible; they truly take consumers for fools.  As a delegate of a consumer association, I fully intend to contact the DGCCRF and suggest to all dissatisfied FREE subscribers to do the same.  The company FREE has a contractual obligation to deliver on its package at 29.99 EUR which means: a functioning phone line, unlimited internet access, and TV. If any of these functions are not working, you have the right to take legal action.

Hello everyone, I also experience phone dropouts during conversations, with a loss of dial tone. After discussing with customer support, I changed the power supply unit of the Freebox (purchased directly from Free for €5 + €5 for shipping). This didn't change my issue with the dropouts and loss of dial tone.

Same problem: lack of tone.
I solved the problem on my end by going to the TV in the Free menu > Telephone > Status > it appeared disabled, and offered me a restart.
Everything was resolved in 10 seconds flat!

Hello,
this is an inconvenience I just experienced following a reset of my Freebox.
I mistakenly reset my Freebox by unplugging the power supply unit (220v) instead of disconnecting the 12-volt power supply of the Freebox.
I no longer had a dial tone on my phone, and external calls were directly routed to my voicemail.
My Freebox sent me a code 88:88 with each reset.
After discovering this error, I reset the Freebox again by only unplugging its 12-volt power supply and, as hoped, everything returned to normal. Phew.

Here it is, the error has been found. I'm posting the answer that could help other Freebox users:   The phone doesn't connect the same way as the old Freeboxes.  You have 2 telephone cords:  The first one, black, ADSL, connects from ADSL to the telephone wall socket in your house, but DO NOT PLUG your phone into it   Your phone connects to the brown socket that is connected to "telephony" on the Freebox HD   It was pretty simple but not obvious at the start  I hadn't seen this connection in the Free videos!

Freebox no dial tone? Maybe a solution for forgetful people like me: Actually, I just bought a landline phone, and when I plugged it in, there was no dial tone. Why? Because, like an idiot, I plugged my phone's cable directly into the wall socket. In fact, you obviously need to connect your phone to the Freebox! More precisely, you need to plug the beige extension (the adapter/filter) provided by Free (I think) into the phone socket of the Freebox, then connect your phone to this adapter. So basically, it’s normal if you don’t have a dial tone when plugging the phone directly into the wall socket above the Freebox power strip. If this can help someone who, like me, plugs in a phone two years after getting their Freebox and lost the manual... great!

Hi, like you, I struggled to find the source of the problem. It turns out that your phone shouldn't be plugged directly into the wall socket (in black) but into the beige adapter that you plug directly into the box. There you go, good luck!

Just go to the free menu > settings > Network information. And in the "Status" tab, go to restart, and then after the restart, the tone should return.

While reading this forum, I thought it was related to the power supply too...
But instead of wasting money and losing even more time, I simply swapped the power cable of the TV box with the one from the internet box... and it works :)

Hello, Problem solved by (re)associating the handsets. The PIN code to use can be found in the management interface of the phone at mafreebox.freebox.fr. This needs to be done for each handset if you have a base connected to the box and several handsets for that base. The associated handsets appear in the DECT tab.

Concerning the Freebox Revolution. I resolved my phone malfunction issue (lack of dial tone, inability to send and receive calls) by following this procedure: https://www.free.fr/assistance/2503.html Indeed, modern cordless phones are equipped with DECT technology; in summary, they can operate without being physically connected to the Freebox (the phone base only needs to be plugged into the power outlet). I completely unplugged my RJ11 telephone cable and re-paired my phone using this tutorial, and my phone worked!
