The folder is not accessible. Access denied.

Hello,

I just got my sister's laptop back which won't start anymore. So I did a reinstallation of Windows XP Home Edition on it myself without success. Then I installed Win XP by changing the folder name. The laptop starts, but unfortunately, I have a folder that won't open. I even tried the Windows assistant and was told to follow these steps:
"a. Click Start, then My Computer.
b. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options, then the View tab.
c. Under Advanced settings, uncheck the box Use simple file sharing (recommended), then click OK."
The problem is that I couldn't find the option "USE SIMPLE FILE SHARING."
I can't find the Security tab?

you go to the control panel, tools, folder options, view
disable simple file sharing
return to the folder, right-click, properties, security, ok, advanced, owner, click on your name, replace the owner,
ok, yes, ok,
ignore the messages stating that you do not have rights on this folder

if you cannot find the security tab, you have the option to download this tab from the net

I wonder if simple file sharing can be disabled in the Home version of XP; I don't really know, but that could explain the problem.

In any case, the "enable simple file sharing (recommended)" option can be found in the menu bar of My Computer, Tools -> Folder Options, under the View tab, and at the bottom of the new window, you should have a list of options to enable or disable. The function you're looking for is IN ANY CASE the last one on the list if it's available.

Moreover, the Security tab is only available once this option is disabled. If you can't disable it, there is no way to adjust the security settings of each folder for sharing.

Hi everyone,

I had exactly the same problem and I found a solution. Apparently, it’s a bug in IE (don't ask me where it comes from, I have no idea)

I suppose when you want to access the computer in question, you either type \\computer_name, or use network favorites > etc...

The solution that works for me and that I'm sure will work for you too is to type in IE or Windows Explorer:
\\ipaddressofthemachine (e.g.: \\192.168.0.2)

To find it out: start > run > cmd then in the console type: ping machine_name

I hope this will solve the problem for some of you!!

Hello I can access a folder (which was forbidden), everything is there except all the bookmarks from Firefox are gone!!!! The problem is that all the applications are no longer executable and need to be reinstalled, including Firefox. But I would like to recover the bookmarks; is that possible?? Hello,
just for information for those who do not have access to their local drive or for a file because it shows up ".. is not accessible, access denied".
And this also concerns those who tried to install security but only for the local drive (which doesn't often happen with a file) even though you have selected the owner, you get a message saying "unable to save permission changes"

THERE IS ONE SOLUTION:
so simple, think of the command prompt, you can do a lot with it lol well the suspense has lasted long enough,
for beginners the prompt is located in start/run/cmd
there you go after you type the command --> cacls :the drive or file\ /the action to be taken better to redefine access to the owner name: the access field being the best total,

example: I had a problem with my local drive C and I set the access under jerem (the owner) to full access which gives cacls c:\ /G Jerem:F
in case you don’t know your owner number then replace it with that of the pc, to find out type in the command prompt --> hostname and replace jerem in the previous example with the name obtained.

For those with XP home:

To display the "Security" tab when viewing the properties of a folder, download the "Security configuration manager" from Windows NT4 at this address: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/tools/scm/scesp4i.exe. Do not run this executable (it will be rejected anyway), but extract it (with Winzip or Winrar for example) into an empty folder (for example c:\NT4). Right-click on the "setup.inf" file, and choose "Install". Several files will be copied, and Windows will ask if you want to replace certain files: SAY "NO" TO ALL! Once these copies are complete, the "Security" tab will be available in the folder options.

I had the same issue of access denied after installing the security tab and changing the owner.
The problem was that my username was not in the list found in: Properties> Security tab> User names or groups.

To add this name, here’s the procedure: click on "Add".

You will then see a "Select users or groups" window:

In the field "Enter the object names to select, enter the name of your Windows session (to know this, click on the start menu and at the top of the dropdown menu your session name should appear, for example in my case it’s "Philippe".

Enter your session name in the "Enter the object names to select" field.

Then click on "Check names": the full name should then appear, for example in my case: SONY-PCG\Philippe. Click OK.

You are then back in the security tab: click on Apply.

The procedure described previously should now work: Advanced settings> Owner tab: select your name which should now appear (sony-pcg\Philippe) and check "Replace owner of subcontainers and objects..." if your box does not remain checked, it means you forgot to click on "Apply" in the previous step!

Hello, I downloaded a music file. After that, the antivirus warned me that there was a virus. So I deleted it, but the file was still there. I could still listen to the music without any problems, but at the bottom of the list, there was "setup.exe". I've been using Resco File Explorer 2003 for about a year to encrypt my folders.
The problem is that I have one folder that I can no longer open; it tells me "RESCO CRYPTING ERROR IN FILE..." "WRONG PASSWORD OR FILE IS CORRUPTED." My problem is as follows: I have a 3 GB hard drive and I used Partition Magic to create a second partition of 17 GB where I saved the files from my desktop, and then I proceeded to reinstall the operating system. Hello everyone So I have this problem. I tried using the Security tab but it didn't work. Then I tried the command given above: cacls l:\ /G my_name:F Now the entire drive has access denied and I can't access it anymore, nor modify anything in the security tab. It's simpler (to execute than if you are an administrator).  Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Create a new account -> "a name you can remember" and set it as an administrator.  Log out of your session and log into the new one, log out of the new session and log back into yours, delete the session you just created by selecting "keep files" and now you can open all the files on the PC.  Best of luck to you.

Hello. I'm probably late to the topic (doctor after death). However, I'm sharing my own experience with anyone who might find themselves (eventually) in this situation: "C:/ is not accessible access denied," and who do not have access to safe mode, who also cannot restore the system, go to the address bar from any folder. Hello, I just tested your workaround after months of searching and desperate attempts, frustration, and "I'm giving up," not understanding why my external hard drive has been asking for all these permissions for months, out of the blue. On top of that, it’s acting up quite a bit, is it too old? It works and then suddenly it seems to disconnect, I have to unplug it, yes it has a plug, it’s old, it’s 500 GB and it's bulky, it’s a Maxtor.
