Dear Member:

Thank you for writing to MSN Messenger Technical Support.

My name is Jocelyn and I will be assisting you. I'm sorry for the late
response. I understand how inconvenient not being able to connect to MSN
Messenger can be and I apologize.

I suggest the following solutions below:

1. Clear the proxy settings in MSN Messenger.
a. Start MSN Messenger. Click Tools, then click Options.
b. Click Connection, then click Advanced Settings.
c. Delete the entries under SOCKS Version 4, SOCKS Version 5, and HTTP
Proxy Server.
d. Click Ok.

2. Adjust the proxy settings in Internet Explorer:
a. Start Internet Explorer. Click "Tools" menu, then click "Internet
Options."
b. Click the Connections tab, then click "LAN Settings."
c. Clear the "Automatically detect settings" check box and click Ok.

Contact your network administrator if you are connecting from a
corporate network. Verify the settings for SOCK Version 4, 5, and HTTP
proxy.

3. Restart your computer. Go to www.microsoft.com, if you are unable to
reach this site, contact your Internet provider for assistance. If you
are able to browse but can't connect to Messenger, follow the steps
below.

4. Ensure that MSN Messenger is permitted through your firewall. If you
have any other firewall aside from the list below, refer to the
firewall's documentation for assistance.
Norton Internet Security/Personal Firewall:
a. Right-click on "Norton Internet Security/Personal Firewall" icon in
your system tray.
b. Click on Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall.
c. Click PERSONAL FIREWALL, on the right hand side, click CONFIGURE.
d. Click on the "Program Control" tab, remove all instances of
MSNMSGR.EXE (MSN Messenger) from the "Manual Program Control List".
e. Click ADD to add MSN Messenger to the list. Browse to: "C:\Program
Files\MSN Messenger", and double click MSNMSGR (the file name may also
be followed the extension .EXE depending on your computer settings).
f. In the INTERNET ACCESS column, ensure that MSN Messenger is set to
PERMIT ALL

McAfee:
a. Right click the McAfee icon on your system tray.
b. Bring up the McAfee Personal Firewall Plus console, Select INTERNET
APPLICATIONS from the left navigation bar.
c. If MSNMsgr.exe (MSN Messenger) is on the list, select the application
and then click DELETE APPLICATION RULE under 'Change Permission To...'
d. Add "MSnMsgr.exe" by clicking NEW ALLOWED APPLICATION option.
e. Browse to: "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger", and double click MSNMSGR
(the file name may also be followed the extension .EXE depending on your
computer settings).
f. Ensure that MSN Messenger has ALLOWED FULL ACCESS under
"Permissions". If not, select MSN Messenger from the INTERNET
APPLICATIONS list. Click on ALLOWED FULL ACCESS from the "Change
Permission To." section.

ZoneAlarm:
a. Right click the ZoneAlarm icon on your system tray.
b. Bring up the ZoneAlarm Pro Control Center, Select PROGRAM CONTROL
from the left navigation bar and click PROGRAMS tab.
c. If MSNMsgr.exe (MSN Messenger) is on the list, right click on MSN
Messenger and choose "Remove" from the shortcut menu.
d. Add MSN Messenger by clicking ADD. Browse to: "C:\Program Files\MSN
Messenger", and double click MSNMSGR (the file name may also be followed
the extension .EXE based on your computer settings).
e. Once you add MSN Messenger to the Programs list, click on the Access
and Server entries for MSN Messenger and change to ALLOW from ASK.
Repeat this for each entry.

5. Sign in to MSN Messenger. If the issue persists, check for the
service status. In the MSN Messenger window, click Help then Service
Status.
