Hello everyone, I'm encountering a problem when I try to activate my Windows firewall; it says "Unable to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service ......
So I went to Administrative Tools / Services and there I click on Start the firewall service which is in automatic mode, and then I get an error 10047 an address incompatible with the requested protocol was used
How do I enable this service??
Thank you in advance

I found a trick that works :D
"Unable to start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing service on Local Computer - Error 10047: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used" :
If you have installed Service Pack 2, follow this procedure:
1) Click on Start/Run and type: cmd
2) In the Command Prompt, type this: netsh Winsock reset
I hope this helps

I have the same problem for 3 days! I don't know why! My network card is not getting an IP! And when I do an ipconfig, I get an error!! It's strange, not even apipa!! So I wonder why? I even did a system restore and I still have the same problem! By the way, I uninstalled my network card! And I see in my connections that I have Network Connection 8! It's like I have 8 network cards!! Do you have any solutions before proceeding with the reinstallation of Windows! Plus, I get the same message that XP can't start the firewall.
Terrible !!! netsh Winsock reset !!!
A friend of mine had this problem and this command solved it for me!!
A big thank you to all of you !!!!

Hi
go to Control Panel ===> Administrative Tools ===> Services ===> Properties of the service / Internet Connection Sharing ===> "Connection" tab ===> click enable at the bottom. Then start the Internet Connection Sharing / firewall service.

Hello. I am experiencing exactly the same problem even though my network and firewall have been working perfectly. I have two Ethernet cards. The first one is currently being used to connect to the internet. The second one is networked to a second computer (obviously). For the past few weeks, I have been unable to access the Windows firewall. As a result, I can no longer share my remote connection (I wonder why anyway), and therefore, my second PC can no longer 'go online.' I have installed Kerio and Avast, but my problem remains unsolved. Why does the system refuse to share my internet line on my network? Is it related to the firewall?
Thank you for your reply, which I hope will be clear for me as I am just a poor user.

Hi Ghost,
The response to this topic didn't help me, I did what was indicated but without success.
I have a Freebox v4 with Wi-Fi and NAT function enabled, I have an Acer laptop on Wi-Fi where I can modify the firewall and a desktop PC on Wi-Fi where I cannot modify the firewall since the wireless network installation.
Error 10047: an address incompatible with the requested protocol has been used
netsh Winsock reset = without success
netsh firewall reset = without success
%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s = without success
Thank you in advance for your response, Ghost
I disable Symantec antivirus and CounterSpy, still without success.

the problem is that I don't have a network connection, just an ethernet card that is not connected so I don't understand
I only have an internet connection via Cegetel thanks to a Sagem Fast800 USB modem!!!!

So your question is fanciful if your network card is not connected... I don't see why to use a firewall either because it is through this card that the firewall operates

Well, it's to avoid external attacks, a firewall right!!
To prevent all unsolicited intrusions, I think!
So according to you, a firewall would only be useful when you're on a network??? If so, does an antivirus alone protect me on the web???

We won't get anywhere with your explanations. If you're on a network, your network card must have a cable and be connected to the modem or a router.
If you're on a 'fake' network and you're sharing a connection, you can't have a router and you must have a second network card to connect to your second PC.
If you only have one network card in that case, you can't have software firewall.
Explain ??

I do have a network card!!! But it is integrated into the motherboard and I don't use it (so I'm not sharing my connection).
So I will repeat my question: is it necessary to have a firewall when you are not operating on a network??? (but you have a network card integrated into the motherboard).
I'm surprised that I can't enable the Windows XP SP2 firewall (error 10047) because other users also have a network card (integrated into the motherboard) and can enable this firewall!!!!!!
Thank you.

The network by definition of the name implies a network card.. and the firewall is generally in the network card.. too bad you don't use it because it's the best way to get fast internet and avoid the troubles of USB modems which cause big issues because they are generally low quality.
Now if you are "alone" the network card does not explicitly mean that you have a local network but even alone it's tranquility..
So your firewall is located after your network card

In fact, I don't use the network card because for now, my USB modem suits me perfectly: I have no disconnections and frankly, Cegetel fully satisfies me, so I don't make use of it. So according to you, the firewall wouldn't be of much use in my case because the risk is minimized without a network??
Because soon I plan to get another PC, so should I protect myself more if I connect them in a network (home)?

A USB peripheral is not a network device, and that's where the problem lies; in the case of USB, it emulates a network card, but it's not ideal!
The risk when using Windows is the same with a single PC as it is on a network, except that it depends on usage in hours??

just never use the automatic system, set your IP manually for your network card and everything will be fine

Hi, I have the same problem except that everything was working fine for me until this morning when I was surprised to find that the Windows Firewall was disabled upon starting my PC, and now I can't activate it anymore; even now it's impossible to start it. I am connected to the internet via the Freebox through an Ethernet card.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Hi everyone.
I followed Mr. Fouleck's instructions. By this procedure, it works. But you have to write "Winsock" with an uppercase W, otherwise it doesn't work.
Thanks everyone.
Bye.

thank you for your tip on the Windows firewall. I had the same problem with error 10047. It works!!!
But I no longer have the firewall icon in the notification area. Can you tell me how to reactivate it? Thanks in advance.

I have just spent two days trying to connect to the internet using an "Alicebox"; the connection was valid but I kept getting the permanent error message in Internet Explorer "unable to display the page"; it was related to the fact that the firewall, disabled, could not be reactivated; then I stumbled upon your message by chance. A thousand thanks; I will share it with colleagues who are struggling with this damn "Alice box".
Claude.
