Hello,

I’m reaching out for help because I’ve read many forums, but unfortunately, I can’t find a solution to my problem. I have an IPHONE 3G, version 3.0, and it is absolutely impossible for me to send any emails from my phone. I’m with Free at home and with SFR for my mobile. If someone could help me, it would be really kind. I can’t take searching without finding any more. I always get the same message when I try to send an email: "the connection to the smtp.free.fr sending server has failed. Other sending servers can be configured, etc...." However, I do receive my emails just fine.

To be on IMAP on your iPhone with a Free account and automatically sync your emails:

On your computer, your Free account must be configured in IMAP.

On your iPhone/iPad:

go to settings then "mail, contacts..." then add an account.
Choose "other" then "add a mail account"
Name: your choice
address: your email address (as on your computer)
password: email password (as on your computer)
description: your choice
press save then wait, the iPhone/iPad will try by default in POP with SSL authentication *and it will show a message about the SMTP server, click ok

enter:

incoming server: imap.free.fr
username: Free email address
password: your Free email password
outgoing server: smtp.free.fr
username: leave blank (clear the content)
password: leave blank (clear the content)
(make "optional" appear)
press save and confirm.
deactivate or delete old POP accounts

enjoy !! your computer and your iPad will only have one mail manager !!

I don't have an iPod touch, so I'm not sure what I'm talking about... however, it's the same OS (iOS 4.2 in this case) so I don't think it should be different.
WARNING Diablo: the iPod does NOT offer smtp, you have to enter it in the outgoing server field, and we're indeed talking about configuring the server in IMAP, otherwise replace IMAP with POP, or else, tell me at which step you get stuck...
If you want, tonight I can tell you exactly how my iPhones and iPads are configured to help you... I think you need to make exactly the same settings as on an iPad (indeed, an iPhone may need the mobile operator's server to send or receive emails, but since that's not the case on an iPod touch, it should therefore be like an iPad), there’s no reason it shouldn't work, hang in there Diablo, we'll help you...
Does your iPod recognize the Wi-Fi network of your Freebox?
Can you browse the internet?
Do you have another email set up in addition to Free?
Are you confusing your Free EMAIL address and password with your Free ACCOUNT username and password? You need the email (just like on your computer if you use Outlook or LiveMail for example...)

configuration for an iphone4s with free:
new messaging account:
fill in the username and password for your free messaging account that you usually use on your PC and then confirm
you will receive an smtp message that denies the password or username click ok
then check the incoming mail (pop.free.fr) your full email address (with xxxxxx.free.fr)
scroll down to the outgoing mail (smtp) enter smtp.free.fr and delete all mail usernames and passwords confirm and check without ssl if it asks you later it worked for me!!

really weird it doesn't work for me !!
I can't get my free mailbox on my iPhone despite all the tutorials and various information !!
I always have an imap problem! if I remove my other gmail emails it works and as soon as I add the free one it doesn't work anymore!

To receive your messages you need to be using POP and not IMAP; IMAP should only replace SMTP for outgoing mail. You should already be able to "receive" your messages with your mail configured as POP for the incoming server. On an iPhone, try using the outgoing server of your MOBILE OPERATOR (some may not support IMAP??). Also, try changing the order of preference for outgoing servers in your iPhone settings.
Otherwise, you can create a Safari shortcut icon on your iPhone's home page with a direct link to the URL of your Free mail on Zimbra; the display adapts to smartphones if you wish, and it's just as fast.

As mentioned above, set the outgoing SMTP server of your MOBILE OPERATOR as the primary outgoing server. And it will work.

Thank you a thousand times cerelog, I can FINALLY send emails from my phone. However, I'm not receiving them anymore..... (connection to the server pop.free.fr fails every time)... another problem. If that rings a bell. Thanks again.

Hello,
I often connect via Wi-Fi from my mobile w705, I'm with Free as well, at home I can send and receive emails from my place, but as soon as I connect to another Wi-Fi network other than Free or FreeWiFi, I can receive emails but I can't send them. Is there a solution for this? Creating another email address elsewhere than with Free that would have an outgoing server accessible from any network, does that exist? Please help me! Thank you in advance,

You need to set your outgoing mobile phone server to send emails, for example for Bouygues: smtp.bouygtel.fr, and the incoming server for Free, so pop.free.fr or pop3.free.fr or imap.free.fr if you are configured in IMAP.

I have the same problem. iPhone 3GS I'm receiving emails but I can't reply or send an email my outgoing server is:
Host name smtp.free.fr
Username is filled in
Password is the same
Use SSL is not enabled
Authentication Password
Server port 587

What should I do? FREE doesn't know either! and is sending me to this site!

You need to use your mobile phone's outgoing server to send emails, for example for Bouygues: smtp.bouygtel.fr, and the incoming server of Free, so pop.free.fr or pop3.free.fr or imap.free.fr if you are configured in imap.

You can also configure it on the iPhone:
1 primary smtp server: bouygtel.fr for example,
1 secondary smtp server: free.fr

With an iPad or iPod, you must use the smtp of Free, but with an iPhone, you should prioritize your mobile operator's smtp (there's a bug if Free's server is primary). I completely disabled the Free secondary server on my iPhone.

So you need to enter the SMTP for Free Mobile, which may not be the same as Free Messaging. I don't know the SMTP for Free Mobile, but it's probably the same...
