Calculate the number of characters in InDesign

Branislav Milic: "The InDesign Info panel shows the number of characters used in the selected article. Recently, I was asked for the number of characters in a 240-page document because the translator needed this information to prepare his translation quote."

"To find out the number of characters in a document without spaces, simply:

1. Search for all spaces (any space)
2. Replace them with nothing and ensure no formatting comes into play
3. InDesign indicates the number of deleted spaces. Then...
4. Search for any character
5. Replace with nothing or with a letter
6. InDesign displays the number of characters replaced after the replacement and thus the number of
characters there were in the document
7. Do not save the document!"

Does this make sense to you? At point 4, search for any character, for example, "e".
At point 6, InDesign will show the number of replacements for the letter "e" and not the total number of characters in the document.

I hope someone has the solution; otherwise, I will have to pull out the abacus and calculate each text block the old-fashioned way!
Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.27.1
