Hello,
I have a problem with USB drive detection in VirtualBox.
I installed VB on Mac and I have Ubuntu as a virtual machine.
I need to retrieve a file that I have on Ubuntu. I've tried everything - folder sharing and USB drive, but I can't get it to work!
The drive is not detected and I don't really understand how the shared folder works.
Can someone help me?
PS: I have already downloaded the add-ons.

I am on Mac OSX, VirtualBox 4.0 and Windows 7 in virtualization.
After several hours of searching to get my USB key, I found the solution:
-download "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" and save the file in "documents"
-launch VirtualBox and install this pack in "VirtualBox - preferences - extensions", click on the little icon to the right of the window "add package", then give the path of the file you just saved and follow the instructions
-once the pack is installed, go to the "configuration" of your new virtual OS, "port", "USB", activate the 2 USB controllers and add a new "empty filter" with the little icon to the right of the window and validate
-launch your virtual OS and plug in your USB key, Windows will install the device driver and there you go! it worked for me
My problem was that VirtualBox detected the USB key without any issue but it did not work under the virtual Windows 7.

Hello
I sent a post (not taken into account?) for USB port detection for (mac/ virtual xp) answering your question about the USB issue
I repeated the same procedure after installing Ubuntu 8.10 as a virtual machine on the Mac(book)...and it works too...but with one hard drive at a time (but not with all my external hard drives except one out of eight).
- Launch Ubuntu (with USB ports enabled in the VirtualBox preferences)
- Eject the drive from Finder
- Unplug and replug the drive
- And without wasting time: select via the USB icon in VirtualBox the drive that will no longer be grayed out (enable)
- Wait (USB icon in VirtualBox blinking red)
It's not very practical but it works. 9/10...for me anyway :-)
The goal is for VirtualBox to take control of the newly inserted hard drive before it's taken by the Finder system.
I didn’t load any add-ons or make any modifications since the first session opened.
To have auto USB activation, I believe you need to have the OSE version and perform several commands in the terminal?

Hello,
To all those who have also experienced this issue, here is a simpler solution (under VirtualBox):
The hard drive must be connected to the PC.
In the virtual machine details, add a USB filter by clicking on USB and then on the icon with a small green "plus".
Select the hard drive from the drop-down list.
From now on, each time the USB device is connected, the virtual machine will take control over the host machine.
Tested from Mac to XP and works perfectly.

Hello
I have the same problem: Mac to XP
You need to activate the USB options in the preferences
If you have the external hard drive recognized but grayed out and therefore cannot select it, you need to eject
the hard drive from your Mac session and reconnect it.....the maneuver consists of reselecting the available USB port on VirtualBox, which will be available for a moment....before the Mac OS system takes over.....
(Mac OS then indicates device removal but it is still connected and being used by VirtualBox)
....you need to wait a moment, then the detection happens
It doesn’t work every time, but after 2 or 3 tries I always succeed....maybe it will work on your Linux.

If it's grayed out, it means the host system is using it. Disconnect the USB drive from the host system (eject the drive on Mac OS, for example), then capture it in VirtualBox (right-click on the USB icon at the bottom right in the Windows window). Be careful, the drive must be formatted in a format readable by Windows (FAT32 or NTFS), not in MacOS!!!
For anyone who has an issue like this. I tested it and it worked perfectly for me. This should be done on your actual machine, meaning the host machine:
1) Right-click on Computer or My Computer (if you are still on XP) and click on "Manage".
2) Go to Device Manager and disable the driver for your device.
3) Restart your virtual machine.
PS: Don’t forget to reactivate the driver later if you need it.

I'm still having this issue with the hard drive not being recognized. I've tried all the methods from this forum but nothing works.
I wanted to install the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack but I'm getting an error message.
