Windows installer stuck on installation

Solved

Hello,

I have an installation that apparently did not finalize properly, and since then Windows Installer is preventing me from installing any program that uses it by bombarding me with error 1500 (another installation is in progress, please... etc)
I did a lot of research before submitting my problem to you, here is a small report:

start/run/ "msiexec /unreg"
start/run/ "msiexec /regserver"

error installation in progress....

I tried to install Windows Cleanup, error 1500 again

I went into regedit to delete the INPROGRESS installation, it didn't change anything.

I must admit I am a bit desperate because the small window "Windows Installer preparing the installation" appears all the time at random and it's preventing me from working.

PS: I no longer have the installation CD of my software, so I hope you can suggest a solution that does not require reinstalling the program.

Thank you in advance for your help, badbob
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.6

Hello badbob,

Before getting everything formatted, try the following if you wish!

Launch the Windows Registry Editor.
First solution.
On Windows XP
Select Start > Run, then type regedit in the Open text box and click OK.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Inprogress.
If the Inprogress key is present, delete it and confirm.
Restart the computer.

Second solution
Unregister the Windows Installer service.
Click Start > Run.
Type msiexec /unreg and click OK.
Register the Windows Installer service again.
Click Start > Run.
Type msiexec /regserver and click OK.
Restart the computer.

Please get back to me with the information afterwards.

Still relevant, this trick is effective and the two processes did not reappear after restarting (Win10 - 64bit).

So good news!!! Apparently I managed to solve the problem!!!!!!!!!!!

After 3 restarts in every direction, I no longer have any errors!!!!

So how I did it:

- Task Manager > End the msiexec processes (in this case 2) by ending the one that takes the most memory (it may sound silly, but the other one reappears in the opposite case), which frees up the Windows Installer. Then I go to my Windows cleanup, I deleted everything starting with Cx... (more generally, delete any variation of the program that bothers you) and restart :) there you go!!! Since then, I haven't had any further appearances of the Windows Installer.

PS: At the moment of ending the process, I tried (Start > Run > msiexec /unreg
then Start > Run > msiexec /regserver) and the fact of putting msiexec back made it automatically restart the ongoing installation.... so in case you have the CD or the installation of the problematic program that can be useful, but in my case it wasn't ideal :)

THANK YOU all for your time and help. Looking forward to it ;)

Will I lose saved data after the system restore date?
Backups of games, programs, text files, etc.?

If the installation of Windows (or another operating system) went wrong, one should ask why it went wrong. Is it because the user prevented the installation or the reboot of the computer during the setup? Is it because the hard drive is damaged in some part? Is the Windows installation CD/DVD/USB damaged or poorly burned? Was there a power outage...? In short, there are many questions to consider.

Knowing that Windows is unstable since you can't do everything you want, there are not many solutions: either try to repair it by booting from the CD and launching it, choosing to install and then repair (but the result is not guaranteed in your case) or proceed to back up all the files you want to keep (documents) and then perform a complete format and reinstallation, letting the computer do it by itself. If it needs your intervention (like setting the time, account name...), it will ask you. But let it do its thing. During the installation, like formatting, Windows needs to restart several times; let it do that, do not prevent it.

Good luck.

Hello,
have you tried a system restore to a date prior to the installation that didn't work?

No, I haven't done anything, my PC isn't that old and most of the time I can handle the little bugs, but this time I admit I'm losing my grip... So I thought about formatting, but I still have a certain number of data and software that I will need to back up on an external hard drive and reinstall, so I would have preferred to avoid that...

We can never say it enough, I believe!

Having only one partition/disk leads straight into a wall! Even if it might be easier not to worry about this, the day Windows has a problem, it will often be too late.

Therefore, always have one partition/disk per Windows (or other) and at least one other (or disk) for backing up data (documents, photos, videos...) and preferably, make a backup of everything on several supports. That way, if one day there is a problem (damaged support), there will be another.

In any case, here, you can back up all documents, spreadsheets... (in short, everything Office), photos, music, videos... but you will not be able to back up or at least reuse later, the software or games but only the saved files.

When a software or game is installed on a computer, it goes into the program files, into Windows, into the registry, into the start menu, onto the desktop, into the documents... in short, everywhere. If you don't put everything elsewhere and properly, it will be unusable because information will be missing. In any case, you can't install too many programs on another partition/disk than the one for Windows because if there is a problem, it becomes unusable and can even make Windows unstable.

Therefore, always create a partition/disk for a Windows (or other). The size for a 98 to Millennium is 1 to 5 GB minimum; XP 20 GB minimum, and Vista 25 GB minimum. If there are no software/games, that is more than enough. If there are many software/games, plan for more space. Next to that, for documents, plan another partition/disk of the size you want. Preferably make multiple backups of the data.

That way, if one day Windows has a problem, you can reinstall Windows and the software/games without losing personal data.

So, plan for reinstalling the software/games when reinstalling Windows.

You can try a restore by going to Start > My Programs > Accessories > System Tools. But if the restore point is not old enough, the problem will be the same. Note that the restoration only affects Windows but not personal files.

start/accessories/system tools/system restore
There you choose a restore point with a date prior to your issue.
You confirm and the PC will restart. It will likely take a bit of time.
If it doesn't work, you can always cancel the restoration afterwards.

OK seen and sorry, I was focused on error 1500 without really analyzing the whole message!
However, what is it about the installation that did not complete, please!

If you have the Windows installation CD, you can try an automatic repair.
Start from the CD
first screen -> install
license -> F8
second screen -> repair after selecting the OS to repair at the bottom
don't forget to disconnect the internet beforehand.
Your personal data and programs will not be affected by this method.

This is programming software for programmable logic controllers (Cx-One), also known as cx programmer, cx-server, and so on. So from time to time, it tries to finish the installation, and then at one point, it asks me for the CD with the appropriate .Msi, but I haven't had that for a while, so even having the CD, I don't have it in the OS. I can't even install Windows Cleanup because it blocks me. :'(

Re badbob, I haven't abandoned you, I've gone to check what it's all about in the meantime, actually regarding Cx-One and at no point is a Windows environment mentioned in the first place!!!
The problem seems to be serious, giving you such or such advice would be nothing but guesswork on my part and unfounded. You say you don't have the Windows XP CD, but if you have a personal license for that operating system, in your place I would get it and repair for a complete reinstallation.
Sorry I can't help you, honestly after searching for a while, I wouldn't know how to advise you.
Best regards.

Hi
I believe you've been given all the possible solutions and I don't see any others, except that your "inprogress" file was probably infected, (unknown on Google?!) so you should delete it. If you don't have the installation CD, we can kind of guess where you found it, so download another one.

But first, restore or repair Windows.

Thank you baluze, but as I said, it seems to be fixed and I don't think I have a virus. I've scanned everything, viruses, Trojans, etc... "we can kind of guess where you found it." I'm a student, we get Windows for free :)

P.S.: The restoration didn't change anything, but maybe I didn't do it far enough back. So if anyone has my issue, don't rule out this solution.

it's not mean, everyone does it (except you and me of course)
I thought it was a poorly installed software and not Windows, and I didn't quite understand your problem with not wanting to uninstall it, hence the misunderstanding.
