Hello,
I bought a Toshiba Satellite P300 laptop with Vista. Everything was working fine, internet, programs, all that. I registered online with Toshiba, I received the confirmation email from them. I restart it several times as is usual when installing things. Then I turn it off once more after finishing making the system recovery DVDs. When I turn it back on later that evening, it says "Enter Password." Not Windows, a small blue window with white letters in an 80s style. It's the BIOS talking, isn't it? An 8-character password, I believe.
Of course, I've never set a BIOS password. I've tried entering passwords like TOSHIBA_ or ADMIN or BIOS, nothing, after 3 attempts it shuts down.
After yelling, I remembered that I might have done the following just before shutting down the PC for the last time (not even sure). I wanted to remove the Windows password (you know, the one it asks for to log into Windows or the admin account thing), I think I messed it up at first. There's a Toshiba Assist icon on the desktop. If you open it, you go straight to windows with tabs asking something like "password: recorded (it was checked) and "password: not recorded" (I clicked it, thinking it would remove the password it asks for every time I start Windows. I believe I rushed a bit but it seems surreal to be able to block a system so severely so easily.
I looked on forums, this kind of problem is addressed but:
1: I don't want to put my hands under the hood of a brand-new PC to blow under I don't know what uranium battery welded under the motherboard's doormat.
2: Those who ask these questions quickly look like PC thieves because it sounds so outrageous as a malfunction and since a forum is not Toshiba's sales service that can authenticate the serial number of a PC registered online.
I read about a girl who was dismissed by FNAC (the PC retailer) and who Toshiba charged 100 euros for doing nothing, so if this is a universal password related to this series of PCs or all Toshiba PCs, I'm willing to share this wonderful secret. My criminal record is clean, I'm willing to provide plenty of details about my public and private life to attest to my good faith as a citizen who did not steal this mean PC. Jokes aside, it's horrible, I'm very anxious. Thank you, see you later.
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 3.0.5

On Toshiba laptops, there is a utility called "Toshiba Hardware Setup" or "Toshiba HW Setup".
Have you perhaps used this software and entered a password in it?

No, not at all put any passwords nor even thought of doing it. Didn't touch "toshiba hardware setup" or "toshiba HW setup".
