Copying files with the same name

Hello,
In the past, under circumstances I have forgotten, I copied (or moved?) files with identical names from several directories into a directory. During this copy or move, a number was added in parentheses to the file names, without me having to take any specific action...
I would like to be able to copy a set of files (several thousand) into a single directory, some of which (probably several hundred) may have identical names.
I can't reproduce the circumstances that allowed me to copy with the addition of an order number. When I search for all the files and then copy them into the target directory, if the file name already exists, my only options are to either overwrite the first file or ignore the second.
Can someone help me?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the quick response.
It will surely help someone else.
When I copied the files, they retained their original names and this one was modified by the simple addition of an order number.
However, I didn't mention in my post that it is important for me to be able to find all the files that had the same name one under the other in the resulting folder.
I want to clarify that I did not perform any particular action; it happened almost unbeknownst to me...
At the time, I thought it was an ordinary function... which is why I did not note how I proceeded. It turns out that the circumstances must have been particular... and that is precisely the subject of my question.
Thanks again,
