Hello,
I have this problem with a Canon DP 450.
(the flashing diode indicates that the used ink tank is full!)
After quite a bit of research, including on CCM, I've come to the conclusion that:
- On this type of printer, there is a big sponge, in the lower part of the printer, that collects the drops ejected during the start-up and cleaning of the print heads.
- This mess is very hard to access, and disassembling the printer to reach it is risky.
- Canon usually doesn't deal with this and requires a workshop intervention for a fee between 80€ and 100€.
- Apparently, there is no saturation sensor for this sponge (like sponge resistivity), but a counter, either for duration or for ejected drops.
- I found several reset methods for this type of printer,... One of them seems to work.
- However, I feel like resetting this counter triggers other resets, and that I need to reconfigure the printer type.
- Canon is silent and completely tight-lipped on the subject...
HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!
Thank you.

I don't know if you found out how to reset the counter on the Canon Pixma MP170.
Here is the reset procedure:
CANON PIXMA MP170 (error 5b00) full waste ink reservoir
1 Turn off the printer
2 Press and hold the STOP button (Red Triangle)
3 While still holding STOP, press and hold ON/OFF
4 Release only STOP and press STOP twice quickly (while keeping ON/OFF pressed)
5 Release everything until the word "idle" appears under CANON on the screen
6 Press STOP 4 times quickly then ON/OFF twice quickly
7 Turn off the printer and turn it back on normally...
That's it.
You will probably need to clean the sponge that absorbs the used ink before it overflows, but it's not very accessible.

Hello, I also have a Canon IP 1500 and I went to the Hardware page where there are solutions for the used ink tank. I succeeded with the first steps but from there:
Step 2: Software for Permanent
1. Reconnect the printer cable.
2. Open General Tools software and select (USB PORT)
3. Choose (SET DESTINATION 1) And it should be reset.
I got stuck. What exactly do I need to do for number 2?
Thanks

I have a Canon Pixma MP490 printer
The printer is blocked by error code 5B00 at startup (ink absorber full). I've scoured the web and no "reset counter" method works from the printer's keyboard (I remain stuck at the "idle" screen of "service mode") and I haven't found any utility software (MPtools doesn't support beyond the MP460 and "IPtools" and "general tools" are also not suitable for this model!) to reset this XXXXX counter. This is the third printer that has failed me in less than two years!
This is a desperate SOS! Help....

Hello,
I have a problem with a PIXMA MP 170 printer.
How can I reset the counter to zero on this device?
Thank you in advance.

You're welcome, but it's already been 2 years since I posted...
Just so you know, I'm a professional, I sell equipment, but I don't accept the manufacturers' policy: making disposable products.
They hide too many things from us that we could repair instead of replacing.
Before selling a new device, I always look to repair it first.

Thank you very much, thanks to this link http://imprimante-en-question.blogspot.com/ and the software, General Tools, my printer is breathing again. Thank you again a thousand times.
Thank you all, but especially to Carlitouch...
On a Canon Pixma IP2000 (without a screen), by applying his "recipe," it works perfectly... too bad for the printer sellers! I'm going to wait a little longer before buying another one!
However, I haven't tried to "clean" the famous used ink reservoir!

Hello,
I've gone through the different posts and I have a similar problem with my Canon S300,
I tried the method mentioned above and I went from 8 orange flashes to 7!! for a green one! This means I now have defective nozzles!! Strange, strange
Anyway, I conclude that the printer manufacturers are quite crafty (all means are good! rrhhhh!!)
Can you help me?
I disassembled the nozzles and cleaned them on the sides and reassembled them without any success!

Well, I have a response. My MP760 stopped working, so I called Canon. They told me to bring my printer in, which I did. They diagnosed it and sent me this response: "The repair cost of your printer greatly exceeds its value, so we propose an exchange of the printer for your deposit check (135 Euros) for the Pixma MP 990."
Obviously, I accepted because my printer is 5 years old, and to buy another one would cost about the same minimum price I would have paid now for the same functions. Well, the MP 990 is much better new; it costs almost 300 Euros, and I paid nearly 200 Euros for my MP 760.
Sometimes, it turns out we worry for not much.

December 29, 2010, I want to thank carlitouch because following his explanation from 2008, I just got my Pixma iP6210D working again, while an Auchan salesperson told me that the repairs on my printer would cost more than a new one. It just goes to show that exchanging information can be helpful. Thanks again, and I advise anyone who might encounter this problem to try the manipulation. I would like to remind that the printer stopped working completely due to the message "ink waste tank full."

thank you for the information on the reset for the Canon Pixma MP 170.
But have you taken it apart to clean the pads? If so, can you briefly describe how to do it? Thank you in advance....
Dominique
Your procedure also works on the PIXMA iP6600D
BEST REGARDS -Francis
Thank you very much!
