Photoshop stays in black and white

Hello,
I don't know why, but when I want to make changes to an image (I'm using Photoshop CS3)
I can only change the color to black, white, and different shades of gray, but I can't use any color at all, whether with the brush or the paint bucket. Can someone help me, please?
