You need to go to Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Power Options, and on the left click on Create a Power Plan, then click Next. Look for where it says Adjust Plan Brightness; both sliders should be fully to the left. Then click Create, and there you go, the problem is solved.

Hi, I solved my dark screen problem on my HP laptop. You just need to plug in your laptop and press the fn key while repeatedly hitting f10 (the brightness +). Then disconnect the laptop's plug and reconnect it. You can do the same thing to increase your brightness when your laptop is unplugged.

Thank you, it also works with Acer (brightness arrow instead of F10).

I have the same problem too! But I think it's normal.

    Hello,
I don't want to discourage anyone, but I encountered this problem a few years ago with an HP nx7000 laptop. I didn't find anything at the software level (reinstalling didn't change anything), so I called HP support (the PC was under warranty) who sent a technician to replace the screen, which didn't fix the problem, leading to another call to HP support, who sent another technician to change the screen again, which still didn't resolve the issue.... I don't know how many times the screen could have been replaced this way (until the warranty expired?), but I do remember switching brands for my subsequent purchases...
    Good luck.

I had the same problem; in fact, I just realized that having two computers plugged into a power strip decreased the screen resolution (brightness).
And indeed, after unplugging and plugging into another power source, everything returned to normal.

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 2009 and I've had this problem since yesterday, which is that when plugged into the power outlet, the brightness decreases. I've checked the settings and the brightness is set to maximum both on AC power and battery.

The brightness up/down key works fine on battery, but on AC power, it only adjusts by 2 levels (like very low and very, very low).

So, has anyone found a way to fix this problem over time?

    Thank you!

It's normal, it's made to save battery when you're not plugged in. You should still be able to adjust your brightness in "Power Options" in the control panel. (or even generally through a keyboard shortcut).

I have the same issue, except that the brightness has nothing to do with the problem; it remains at 100% but the screen is black... Help?

For me, it's the opposite that happens when I plug in my PC; it becomes dark.

Oh yes, I read too quickly, it's true that your story is surprising...
You must have power configuration profiles (plugged-in computer/battery computer) with brightness among other things. I don't know about HP, but usually, you can find that in the control panel.

I had the same problem. I was on the HP Recommended mode (printer). I switched back to energy saving mode and everything returned to normal. When I plug in, it’s clear, and when I unplug, the brightness decreases.

I've looked, and I can't find anything that solves the problem. If someone could help me, that would be great. Thanks.

      Hello,

I have exactly the same problem as you for the past few weeks, on an HP Compaq that I've had for over 3 years.

I really can't figure out what it's due to??!

Well, my problem still isn’t solved so I’ll keep it unplugged to see better, but the battery drains quickly, so I’m sorry for not having a solution... If you ever find one, will you think of me?

Hello, I'm experiencing the same dark screen problem while plugged into the power since yesterday on my HP Pavilion zv6000, which is 3 and a half years old. I'm wondering if there's something related to the power supply because I just replaced it, as the old one failed two weeks ago.
What’s curious is the sudden reversal of the settings: when it's on battery, the screen lights up as if it were on power, and vice versa.
On Monday, I will call HP support, and if my problem is resolved (I suppose it's just a small fix, but you probably just need to know where to look, and I haven't found anything in the control panel), I'll come back to let you know the steps to take because this situation is not pleasant!

        Best regards. Brett.

        Good evening,

I have the zv5000 and I haven't changed anything, everything is original.
If you have the solution, I would appreciate it if you could give it to me, thank you in advance.

    Hello,

the screen of my Pavilion is dark when plugged in but fine on battery!

    And the basic trick:

fn and f7 for less brightness or f8 in my case for more brightness.
