Catherine, normally when you have the red cross, it means he talks correctly. Try going into preferences, press to activate sounds, to not have the red cross, and then finish, you will see that the sound is disabled (small round logo crossed out), actually the preferences work the other way around, so you need a red cross on "activate sounds".
Otherwise, in the preferences, you will look for the "volume preference" icon (be careful the icon may be on a different page than the first, you may need to go find the right page with the right arrow)
