TomTom won't turn on

Attempt No. 1: The "power" button. The first thing to test, whether it's on or off, if it's unresponsive, is to press the "power" button for several seconds. If nothing happens after 10 to 20 seconds, you will need to move on to the next step. On an off TomTom, this will correctly restart it. On an on TomTom, this may help turn it off.

Attempt No. 2: The "Reset" button. Located underneath the TomTom (see visual), a small hole of 1 millimeter in diameter allows for reset. Don't worry, this will not affect your settings. You will keep your last map, voices, POIs, etc. There will be no content modification. It is simply a forced restart. This action resolves most problems. If that is not the case, I invite you to try the next attempt.

Attempt No. 3: A method that regularly works may seem quite absurd, but I recommend it in case of unresolved freezing. Sometimes the TomTom starts but freezes on the home screen. In that case, press the "power" button for a good while until the home screen disappears. Once this is done, wait a few seconds and then repeat exactly the same action until you (hopefully) see your GPS actually start up. The duration for pressing the "power" button is very random. There’s no need to exceed 2 minutes.

Reset Attempt No. 4: The "TomTom Home" software. If despite the previous attempts, your GPS still refuses to come back to life, then a little detour via your computer can prove useful. Connect your TomTom to your computer using the USB cable. Launch the "TomTom Home" software (see "The TomTom Home software" if you haven't installed it yet). Perform an update, then disconnect it properly!

Attempt No. 5: Reinstallation. If you've reached this step, then you haven't been lucky, but all is not lost yet. Since you are a serious and foresighted person, you have backed up using the TomTom Home software or manually (see How to back up your TomTom). In that case, connect your GPS to your computer using the USB cable. And restore an old backup (see Restore a backup).

Attempt No. 6: Despite all these efforts, are you still unable to resolve it? If you don't have a backup, then I advise you to contact TomTom. They should be able to assist you by sending a new memory card or by troubleshooting in other ways. If you have a backup but cannot restore it, either the copy is damaged (try another backup), or your memory card is damaged. In the latter case, you will need to replace the memory card and install one of your backups. (see Replace a memory card).

If you have tried everything, then just go ahead with "Attempt No. 6."

There is a "reset" button on the back of the Tom Tom. Press it with a paperclip and it should work.

I have a 720 where you can put a 2nd card, hence my question

if it is the main card, make a complete copy to the pc or a dvd, then delete EVERYTHING THAT IS NOT IN A FOLDER on the card
and try connecting again

You need to do a 5-second reset, without turning it on afterwards, and then put it on charge!
The reset is located under the TomTom near the connections; there is a small hole accessible with a paperclip, for example! Good troubleshooting! Séb.

Do you have access to the tt folders in the Windows Explorer without starting the tthome software?
