Unknown method in winrar

Hello,
I would like to know how to open a compressed file in RAR format when WinRAR tells me "unknown method" in... the file concerned under Windows XP.
Thanks to everyone who can help me because this problem is a pain.

    Hello.

    You probably have WinRAR 2.x and you are dealing with a file compressed with WinRAR 3.x.

    Files compressed with WinRAR 3.x are unreadable by WinRAR 2.x
    (because of the new compression methods).

      Could you tell me where I could find WinRAR 3.x?
      Are issues like the file header being corrupted or no files to extract caused by the "wrong" version of the software?

    If it says "unknown method," it doesn't necessarily mean that the file is corrupted.
