Facebook friend count display bug?

The number you see displayed is indeed the number of people online, but it is not updated very quickly.

When you click, you can then see the names of the people online, and the number changes either up or down, there you go!

same problem: yesterday I suddenly went from 189 to 199 friends. When I count them one by one, there are indeed 189, and fb shows me 199. I have 10 ghost friends...

Same last night I had 512 friends and this morning I find myself with 542 friends. In my friends list, all deleted or deactivated accounts are displayed.

One of my friends has the same issue; she sees deactivated profiles.
Moreover, this morning, I saw common friends appear with people, even though I have none with them or more common friends than I actually have with them.
When I click on a friends list, I have common friends; either below, there is no image (but a common friend), or there is the right number of friend images, but the number is higher than the images.
And Facebook is not responding and doesn't even send acknowledgment emails anymore...

In my opinion, there's a mix-up with Facebook and disabled accounts... they count them numerically in our friends list.

I have exactly the same problem. I have supposedly "321" friends but in reality I only have 298. When I click on my friends list, many accounts have been disabled for a long time, or are duplicated. Has anyone found a solution? Or a response from Facebook?

Yeah, I have the same thing, Facebook is adding friends for me! It says 194 while I only count 192 in my list, considering that among those 192 I've also counted the ones who have deactivated their Facebook account, so I should normally have way fewer friends.

I was able to remove the disabled accounts from my list (and by the way, they were indeed in there). Actually, you just need to click on the name of the disabled person, Facebook indicates that the account is disabled, and then you have to click on the link to remove them from your friends list.
So it removed about twenty for me, but there are still around ten too many, and I can't see why.

Hello, I seem to have a similar issue.
There are "blank" entries appearing in my friends list. These "blanks" are counted as friends and there's no information on who they might be.
Do you have a solution to identify and remove them?

I found it!!!
When you search for "friends" in the search tab, it suggests "friends" that were not appearing in the list. I noticed that they were indeed deleted accounts and I was able to delete them very easily myself.
If that can help...

it's not logical at all, there's a limit of 5000 friends it seems...
it's a bit similar for me, I have around 117 friends, and now it went up to 141 (and I added one person, she didn't show up either).
I've reported the problem to Facebook several times, with no response.

still, it's going to go from 117 to 141
but for me, it's more than doubled
and since normally, unless I'm mistaken, friend requests are limited to 20 after that it blocks

It's showing me 11 more friends than the day before.
I noticed that disabled profiles (not deleted) have been appearing for some time.
Even when counting my friends + the disabled profiles, I still have 4 more friends!! Is it the calculation of deleted profiles this time??

It's the same for me for quite some time; I have deactivated profiles (I'm sure, because my brother is on it and he has deactivated his account) that have been showing up for quite a while... I already reported it to Facebook, but there hasn't been any concrete follow-up (well, they suggested I change my username, even though I normally couldn't do that anymore).

I just read your message, and for my part, I haven't found a real solution except that I'm now working around the problem, and I recommend you do the same even if it's a bit more complicated, by changing your password fairly regularly (in fact, whenever you see that it's starting to act up again regarding the number of friends).
That's what I've been doing for the past few weeks, and the problem has stabilized...
I've learned since then because I asked a friend who is a computer scientist working at Google, something unverifiable, but which could be quite alarming, that there are serious rumors going around about the infamous "Facebook team" apparently allowing themselves to delete a few contacts here and there, just to free up storage space on their computers...??? Without falling into paranoia, it's the kind of wrongdoing
that wouldn't surprise me at all coming from an American giant! :( !

In short, change your password fairly regularly, if it's a program that, as I think, is nibbling away at your friends, it will complicate things for it and you can try to keep everyone, that's what I've been doing since, and it's true that I'm losing a lot fewer...
