Indeed, the "official" solution that first goes through Caption Insertion allows for automatic numbering, which is very flexible since you only need to move an image with its caption for the numbering to update automatically. Moreover, you can choose different identifiers based on the objects if you want a list of images, tables, or anything else.

Nevertheless, your solution using styles is also interesting and can be applied to any text from which you later wish to make a list.

I should clarify, however, that the caption insertion solution does not require field display (ALT+F9) and there is no need to worry about variables. I only provided these explanations to help understand how it works.

Raymond, if I may, the style has nothing to do with the insertion of the list of illustrations.

What is included in a list of illustrations is the variable assigned to the SEQ (sequence) field.

When we display the codes (Alt+F9), we see {SEQ Figure} or {SEQ Table} for example.

Then, when we insert the list of illustrations, we choose the type of list to insert via the drop-down list Caption.
I want to clarify that it's called Illustrations, but we can use this feature for any type of objects (tables, equations, ...).
alembik1213, we need to know how you inserted your captions and your list.
