Hello,

Having searched for the simplest possible tutorial to set up my "home" FTP server that would work both from home and externally, and not really finding one, but only bits of information here and there, I found how to proceed, so here is my tutorial, which I hope will help.

On one side, I have 2 computers with XP, one of which hosts my server, and on the other side, friends who want to share files with me, with the Freebox (v5) in between.

1/ Install FileZilla Server and FileZilla client on the computer you have chosen as your server:

FileZilla Server and FileZilla client: https://filezilla.fr/

FileZilla client tutorial: https://framalibre.org

FileZilla Server tutorial: https://framalibre.org

First, follow these tutorials to the letter, we will then see the modifications to be made.

2/ For the sake of organizing your files neatly on your computer, I recommend creating a specific folder where the files to be shared will be stored. You can even create additional folders within this folder if you want to create several accounts for your different friends... but do as you wish! ;-)

That means your main folder will be at:

c:\My documents\My FTP folder

and your "subfolders" at:

C:\My documents\My FTP folder\Pierre's folder
C:\My documents\My FTP folder\Paul's folder
C:\My documents\My FTP folder\Jacques' folder

3/ Create accounts on FileZilla Server:

The procedure is in the previous tutorial, but to help you, here’s how I did it.

Go to: “Edit” then “Users”
In the “General” menu, create your main account with a password.
In the “Shared folders” menu, add your folder “c:\My documents\My FTP folder”, then check all the options for “Files” and “Directories”, this will allow you to have full rights over this folder even from a distance. The rest of the options can remain on “Default”.

To create secondary accounts, follow the same procedure except for the folders that will be “C:\My documents\My FTP folder\Pierre's folder” (etc.), and do not check all the options for “Files” and “Directories”; it’s up to you to choose the freedom you want to allow for the account users.

4/ Configure FileZilla Server:
The only necessary parameter to change is:
“Edit”, then “Settings”, then “Passive mode settings”; once there, make sure to check the “Default” box.

5/ Configure the Freebox (v5):
Go to the Freebox management interface, log in, then click on the “Internet” tab on the left. Click on “Configure my Freebox router”.
Fill in or check:
- You want to enable this service: check!
- Freebox IP: 192.168.0.254
- DHCP enabled: check!
- Start DHCP: 192.168.0.xx > this is the address of your 1st machine on your network
End DHCP: 192.168.0.xx > this is the address of your last machine
- DMZ IP: 192.168.0.0
- Freeplayer IP: 192.168.0.0
- Ping response: check!
- WOL (Wake On Lan) proxy enabled: do not check in the context of this tutorial
- Port forwarding: leave empty
- Port range forwarding: Start: 20, End: 21, Protocol: tcp, Destination:
192.168.0.xx (the IP address of your computer on your network).
- Permanent DHCP leases: leave empty

Then click “Send”.
You then need to unplug the power cord from your Freebox and plug it back in, then let the Freebox reset.
I recommend that as soon as your connection is restored, check first to see if all the settings you just entered have been correctly taken into account, as I had to repeat the operation three times before the Freebox was actually configured.

6/ Once logged back into the Freebox management interface, take the opportunity to note down the IP address you will find under “Internet”, then “Show my IP address; note it down on paper!

7/ Configure FileZilla Client:
Use the tutorial “https://framalibre.org

The information you will need is:
The IP address of your computers at home, this address is in the form:
192.168.0.xx; along with the username and password of the account you created in Filezilla Server.

8/ You can also connect via a browser such as Mozilla, by typing directly into the address bar “ftp://xx.xxx.xxx.xxx” The Xs being the IP address noted on the Freebox management interface, meaning your IP address on the internet. Your friends from outside can also connect to your server with this address, along with the username and password of the account you decided to assign them. To connect from outside using FileZilla Client, the same parameters as in step #7 apply, except the IP address will now be your IP address on the internet.

I hope I have been clear and that I haven’t forgotten anything. I cannot guarantee that this tutorial is valid for any configuration other than the one presented throughout. Of course, you can make corrections! ;-)

Alfie.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0

Well, it's very nice of you to share this tip with us :-)
It would be good to include it in the faq
Well, we already have a similar tip:
http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet 3028 installing an ftp server on windows

But yours is more suitable for the freebox... We could potentially integrate your tip into the existing one, or create a new one. I’m not really sure.

...and uh... yeah, well that's it...
