Change the Vista username

Hello,

I would like to change the username on my laptop running Vista. I modify it in the user settings, and at first glance the change is made, but as soon as I open the user folder, the name remains unchanged. Is there a solution? thanks in advance
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.14

    If you want to change the username entered during Windows Vista installation, open the registry by typing regedit in Run… → OK.
    then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion, navigate to RegisteredOwner, open it and replace the name found in Value data with the new one, then OK

      This procedure only changes the user name, not the computer name, i.e., the name assigned at installation...

      To change the name registered on the system you need to do this:

      - Click "Start" (flag) then right-click "Computer" in the drop-down menu.
      - Click "Properties" then in the right-hand menu click "Advanced system settings" and click "OK" if the confirmation message appears.
      - Click the "Computer name" tab and click "Change".
      - Enter the name you have chosen for your computer and click "OK"

      There you go ;-)

    Well, for me it doesn’t work...

    I have my name in the registry but it’s still the old user’s name that appears...

      Hello everyone!!


      Under Vista, to change the name of the icon (My Documents, under XP): 1- At the start of our session. 2- The document one: user files on the desktop, or when the Start menu is in classic view it is at the top right panel of the Start menu, with the same image and name in all 3 cases. There are 2 ways to modify the name.

      The first, click: Control Panel / User Accounts / change your account name, when the Control Panel is in classic view. By default, in display: Control Panel Home. Click directly: User Accounts and Family Safety / User Accounts / change your account name :D


      The other way also allows changing the computer name on the network too: To change the name on the network only, STOP at step 3.

      To also change the name of the icon (My Documents, under XP): 1- At the start of our session. 2- The document one: user files on the desktop, or when the Start menu is in classic view it is at the top right panel of the Start menu, with the same image and name in all 3 cases.

      1- Right-click on the computer icon (which is on the Desktop or in the right panel of the Start menu, depending on display: classic, or the default Start menu) Then click Properties.

      2- A window opens, in the 2/3 right of the screen, this area is split into 4 horizontal blocks. To the right of the third block, bearing the name: Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings. You will click on Change settings.

      3- System Properties: in the Computer name tab: enter the desired name. (ONLY MODIFYING THE COMPUTER NAME FOR THE NETWORK)

      *If you do NOT want to change the computer name on the network, skip to step 4.
      **To change both names, follow all steps.

      4- Still in System Properties, in the Advanced system settings tab / In User Profiles, click: Settings / in this window at the bottom a small link: User Account / modify your name. :D

    Thank you for your reply, but this is what I did. The "no change" remains in the Start menu, but as soon as I open the folder Computer/Local Disk C/Users, the old name comes back... that's where I’m stuck. What should I do?

    and well you go to the control panel you will see an icon labeled users and there you will see it is very simple you will be able to make all possible modifications for example set a password or stuff like that

    By the way, when I go to the Task Manager -> Processes, they are all named after the previous owner....

      I have the same problem as you, have you found a solution? I replaced the name in the registry editor but it doesn't work :(

    Hi,

    I changed RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization with the new name .. but apparently I didn’t fully understand the explanation about: However, to change the name completely in the system, you also need to modify the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<sid of="" the="" account="">\\ProfileImagePath, but also change all occurrences of the old name. Indeed, you must take back the entire NTUSER.DAT hive of the account in order to modify all references to the old path with the new one.

    When I tried to change the name in ProfileList and I rebooted the PC it logged me in under a TEMP user .. hence I had to revert to the old name ..

      Sorry, I was away for a few days... I see you understood my problem, thank you for looking into it! Were you able to find something? For me, mystery and a ball of rubber (nonsense) but it's quite annoying to see a name come up again that I don't want to hear... Thanks in advance!

    I’ve tried, but so far I haven’t found anything yet; if it’s just a Windows Vista configuration issue, that’s why I’ll likely install Linux on my new PC.

      Sorry, I was traveling again... Yes, perhaps we simply can't change it unless we reformat... I don't know if I would go as far as reinstalling Linux, I have a HP laptop and I admit it's tricky. In any case, if someday someone discovers how to change this ... username, please let me know. Thanks anyway for your help!!

    Hi,
    Another Vista blunder... I tried to change the computer name ... it's a simple request, and yet Vista makes everything complicated... After several attempts with different names, there’s always a trace of the old name... Under DOS, the directory even gives me a name I had given at the first install. This thing is getting crazier and crazier...
    Okay, I’m deleting everything, I finally put back the same name I had given initially: I now have only one administrator account, but whatever name I type, I still don’t have the permissions needed when I want to delete or install a program .... !!!!

    On one side there is the computer name, and on the other side the user name (one account, configured as admin), but there are still traces here and there of other names. By looking around, I managed to find 4 different names, lol. I dare not give another new name ...
    How can I change everything once and for all without having to perform too complicated maneuvers....

    The more I wade through Vista sludge, the more I love apples :-)

    actually it's very simple you just have to change the administrator account name and the user folder name changes at the same time as the account name There you go******

    Well no, exactly because I keep changing the account name, but nothing works, the folder name stays unchanged and cannot be renamed... It's interesting, the story of Crazyloco... It must be a Vista bug!
    But if someone has another idea, I'm all ears!

      Create a new administrator account, close the old account, and delete it from the new one. You will then be asked if you want to keep the files; if yes, you proceed, and all files from the old account will be kept and can be used without restriction. A folder on your desktop will indeed contain all your data from the previous account.
