Warcraft 3 => Black screen but sounds!

Hello,
So here it is, I've been trying to get Warcraft 2 The Frozen Throne to work for a while now... since I bought my PC with Vista, when I launch Warcraft I get the cinematic and then a black screen but I can still hear the sounds (the wind noise ^^). I've searched through forums but found nothing, I've downloaded patches, downloaded software, downloaded the latest version of DirectX, updated my drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled Warcraft 3, started it as an administrator, changed the compatibility mode, but all of that has failed. So, since I don't know much about computers, I'm a bit stuck on this issue. Thank you in advance and sorry for the spelling mistakes.
Goodbye :)
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

    Hello everyone,

it's a really silly thing, I had the same problem

    follow these steps:

    - workstation
    - windows c:/
    - find where you installed frozen
    - right click on the frozen throne icon (where you can see Arthas's ugly face)
    - properties
    - compatibility
    - check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
    - choose Windows 2000
    - click apply
    - close
    - relaunch the game
and tada here are the beautiful cutscenes of frozen

Or you can just right-click on the icon on your desktop > properties > compatibility tab > check - Run this program in compatibility mode.

    Hello,

Personally, I play on Vista and I have no compatibility issues "Lucky? " :p

Otherwise, well, uninstall it and reinstall it, after all, you have nothing to lose...

    Hello :)

Well, I'm going to give a tip that worked for me with Vista. (I'm so happy)

This game is fully compatible with VISTA, no worries.
During the first launch of the game, you have an introduction.
For me, I only had sound but no video.

Similarly, I searched everywhere, but always the same answers (reinstall, clean up, etc... as if that's all they know how to say)

Well, Warcraft 3 is an old game, and the hardware has evolved a bit.
Based on this principle, I looked for what had changed and what could cause problems. It's not the graphics cards (aside from the power and new effects), nor the motherboards, nor the compatibility with VISTA.

IT'S THE HARD DRIVES THAT ARE TO BLAME.

This game dates back to 2003, and the hard drives of that time are in IDE format!!!
The problem is that most modern hard drives are in AHCI...

It occurred to me that the hard drive might be too fast and miss the video boot. And indeed, the AHCI format is faster than IDE.
(there's really not much, I don't even notice it... -10% apparently...
But well, I don't see it, Vista is still responsive)

So that's the issue, you need to switch to IDE!!! the format of the time.
By the way, many applications, software, and games from a few years ago have this kind of issue with AHCI. Since they weren't designed for it.

They are made to work in IDE, so well... you have to switch to IDE...!!!

Except that... ^^ you might not find it as funny now...

    1) I hope your hard drive still accepts the IDE format
(normally, I suppose it does, I think they all do)

    2) You will need to access your BIOS (unless someone has another way to propose) and your BIOS offers to switch the hard drive to IDE

    3) You will need to reinstall the operating system lol ^^

So, I did it this way since I didn't want to complicate things, Vista is now in IDE and it's very good like that. If you think of reinstalling in IDE and then throwing your complete backup that was made in AHCI over it, forget it, it doesn't work ^^ (I tried)

    IMPORTANT

Apparently, there is a solution (I say apparently) to change the disk format without having to reinstall everything. I'll give you the link.

    https://tt-hardware.com/news/hardware/mis-en-place-du-test-pour-le-ray-tracing-dans-3dmark/

So this one is for switching from IDE to AHCI (I couldn't find anything else)...
But I suppose the opposite is possible, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be.

So there you go, it worked great for me. If it still doesn't work for you after that, it means your problem comes from elsewhere. But well, there's a good chance it's that...

There you go. Hoping this helps you. Because despite the years, there are games that are still just as good ^^

I have the same problem with The Sims 3
I have Windows 7 and when I launch the game I get a black screen but with the sound of the intro.

That's the best and least problematic response:
Right-click on the icon on your desktop > Properties > Compatibility tab > Check - Run this program in compatibility mode.

And if the computer says that this change could jeopardize the system, what do we do because I already did it with an update for my drivers and now it's crashing badly.

Try changing the screen refresh rate settings.
In the NVIDIA panel of the graphics card, not all configurations are initialized by default, especially if it's connected to a TV...
You need to select configurations with at least a 75 Hz refresh rate.

    Good luck.

I found a really simple trick (for Windows 8, not sure about the others): right-click on the desktop shortcut, then "Troubleshoot compatibility," then wait for it to find issues (it might take a little time) and finally, when the window opens, select "Recommended settings," then check if the game works, then click next, and then do "Save these settings (if it works) and done! (lol it's super simple actually! no SD card, no color resolution ... just automatic debugging!)

Well, thank you for responding anyway, but I uninstalled the game at least a good ten times, so I kinda gave up on the uninstallation^^ But apparently, it seems to work for some people on Vista. A friend of mine fiddled with it so that I could play, and it worked perfectly, but I had to uninstall it to be able to play World Of Warcraft peacefully. Since I no longer have credit to play, I would like to get back to Warcraft 3 (and unfortunately, my friend has gone up to the north of France (I live in the center), so you see it’s a bit difficult to arrange a meeting for a PC. Thank you anyway, hoping someone can solve my problem.

Don't you have another game to install for testing???

PS: I have WoW and Warcraft 3 on my PC and I have no issues with Vista

You must have made a mistake somewhere because... well, if WoW is running on your PC, there's no reason why W3 shouldn't run either.

Has anyone ever tried to contact Blizzard themselves to see if they had a solution regarding this issue by the way? %)

I’ll just bump this a little; I believe this topic is causing problems for a lot of people, myself included. And I doubt that Vista is an issue since DaySi installed it on Vista and some of my friends have it on Vista too. As for me, same thing, black screen on startup, just the sound of the fan.

So if anyone has a solution, please don’t hesitate to share it with us! Thanks in advance!

Et si c'était un problème de résolution ? Je suis dans la même galère, Diablo 2 marche bien, mais Warcraft 3 non. Moi, je tourne avec Windows XP, coccinelle.

I had the same issue. I was using the HDMI output from my graphics card.
I switched to the VGA output and now it works.

    Hello,

There I lived the same until the day when (on Vista) I changed the game's video resolution to 1278*768... and I did the current game update:

So just in case, test to see.

    Tcho and good luck.
