PC dead after a violent storm... what to do?

Question

Hello, Following a violent storm, even though my PC was turned off (except for the power strip switch), my PC seems dead today, there's no power coming from the tower. The screen is fine, the speakers are fine, but nothing happens at the level of the unit. Question: should I start looking for a new PC? Or is there something I can do to remedy the situation? And if so, is it worth it (financially speaking)? Thank you in advance for your help, have a great day babounette

Hi, Ouch, it doesn't smell good, you need to unplug during the storm; otherwise, the surge will still reach the power supply... In theory, only the power supply is fried, so you just need to replace it. I don't know if you have a way to try another one before buying a new one... The price range (new) is about €50, so unless you have a lot of money in your account and your PC is an antique like a 386, then yes, it's worth it... Good luck...   .  .  Well! Logically, the overcurrent has burned your power supply; there can be several faults, but the first thing you need to check is your power supply. For that, it's simple: you disassemble it, and you should see a black spot. If you don't see anything, check again by replacing it or by connecting it to another PC. The only thing I wish is that your motherboard hasn't been damaged. neo

Hello,  my PC was brand new, from spring, and during my absence, a storm hit, and it seems that lightning went through the Livebox. It is now with the repairman, and it appears that the motherboard is affected. My big concern is the hard drive. I'm waiting any minute to find out if it is damaged or not, and the gentleman told me that if it is, all my files will be lost. The only possibility would be to send this drive to Paris or Brest, and the price is exorbitant! About €1500!  My question is whether there is really no way to recover my files otherwise! Among them are software that I had downloaded online and especially my years of research!  Some of them are fortunately saved elsewhere; but I didn't have time to secure my more recent work.  I need this data, and I am really more than sad about this situation, I haven't even finished paying for my installments for its purchase... I have a professional project underway, and therefore my PC is my primary tool!  If anyone can help or advise me  Thanks in advance  ceriduen

Good evening,  This response comes 4 years later lol! But I got the joke today: I went out shopping leaving both PCs on. A violent orange light flashed within minutes: as a result, when I came back, one of the two computers had shut down: I was panicking because it's the "bigger" of the two! I received information from a friend that it could very well have been a safety feature that shut down my PC and that it needed to be reactivated in another way: she told me to check behind the computer for a button to press: there was one: and indeed, my PC turned back on!   I also installed a small surge protector at home. But she gave me a good piece of advice that I want to share with you because I was greatly helped by different posts here. She advised me, especially to protect my music, to install an external hard drive that would remain completely protected in case of a storm, and we can get a good one for €70, she told me.
