Hello everyone

I would like to hear your opinions, I've always heard that you should unplug your computer and modem in case of a storm because otherwise there is a risk of damaging the modem or the computer?

Are these claims true in your opinion?

Have a nice day everyone,

Hi,
it's totally true. And it applies to all electrical devices in general.
Thunderstorms, or rather lightning, are by far the leading cause of outages in telecom networks.
To protect against this (if IT and telecom equipment must operate even during storms), you need to install surge protection devices that protect electrical and telephone lines.
They don't stop everything, but they eliminate most of the surges.
Also, there's the risk of power cuts (frequent during storms) that can result in data loss and may even destroy the disk allocation tables, hence losing unsaved files.
Here, there’s only one protection: the uninterruptible power supply (the real one that runs continuously on the battery while it charges, so without interruption).
Finally, it's important to know that the risk is multiplied by 100 in rural areas where electrical and telephone lines are overhead compared to urban areas where the lines are buried, and thus much better protected.
