having 2 compatible antivirus can be done

To all those who have Avast and "have never had any viruses," try a test: uninstall it and install Antivir or others. Normally, if you didn't have a good firewall with Avast, you should find some nice infections.
Check out the very good article on Avast. Look at the number of infected people who ask for help while using Avast...
In fact, we should make a sticky post with the number of infections reported by antivirus on this forum ^^ People would better realize their current vulnerability with Avast the sieve.
Having 2 antivirus at the same time is the best way to block both and slow down your PC.

I agree, we are here to help ....
And that's why it's better to avoid telling nonsense.
If 2 "compatible" antiviruses, as you say, won't block each other, they may cause problems because of their need to exclusively access certain files.
But you must be particularly skilled in IT because there are some real experts here, and everyone advises against using 2 antiviruses.

I've noticed a sort of anti-Avast cabal lately.
Following various messages I've received, I've decided to reopen this discussion to clarify certain points.
*** Critique: Look at Malekhal's test! Avast is worse.
I have already pointed out the issues with Malekhal's test.
If we want to take other independent tests, we can also take the one from av-comparatives.
What’s their conclusion? Avast is better than Antivir.
I am willing to read with interest the criticisms of Avast, but not based on a single and unique report, always the same.
PS: I have no shares in Alwil. CCM doesn't get anything either.
*** Critique: Antivir doesn't filter emails, but Avast's email filtering is useless.
That’s false.
This shows a lack of knowledge of computer security and the history of viruses: The Nimda virus was capable of infecting a machine just by displaying an HTML page.
Since Outlook uses IE to display HTML pages, I'll let you draw the conclusion...
We can also take the example of viruses that exploit MSN vulnerabilities to take control of a PC before any file has even been written to disk.
Avast also filters MSN protocols, and some others.
The fact that Antivir only scans files seems insufficient to me.
Email filtering isn’t just to filter attached files, but also to protect against bugs in the email software itself.
PS: By the way, there's a new trend regarding machine hacking: viruses that infect the machine stay in memory and never write themselves to disk.
This attack is more common on servers because they are rarely restarted, and makes the virus difficult to detect since there is literally no trace in the files.
This kind of attack is perfectly feasible under Windows and will probably spread, especially because Vista now uses hibernation or sleep modes by default (which keeps the virus in memory).
*** Critique: Antivir is in English, but that's not a big deal.
No, it's not a big deal, but it's a problem for many internet users who don't speak English.
In case of infection, it is crucial for the user to understand what the software is telling them.
*** Critique: 99% of infected PCs have Avast.
It will take more than a number pulled from a hat to convince me.
And counting the machines where Avast was installed after an infection is pointless.
*** Critique: There are plenty of infected PCs while equipped with Avast
That's true.
Fantastic!
You’ve just discovered that no antivirus is 100% reliable.
I’ll say it again, in bold: Regardless of the antivirus you install, there will always be things that can slip through.
Why do we see more Avast on the virus/security forum than Antivir?
Because we massively recommend Avast to beginners, and this population is known for not taking the necessary steps to secure their machines (firewall, updates, etc.)
I illustrate my point: You can have the best antivirus in the world: If you don’t have a firewall and the security patches, a virus could disable your antivirus remotely by exploiting Windows RPC vulnerabilities (port 445), and this before even a single byte has been written to the hard disk by the virus.
So, no, once again I repeat: having an antivirus alone will not protect against infections.
And even with the winning combo (antivirus + firewall + antispyware + windows update), there will always be infections.
This is how computer security works.
*** Critique: Look: The XXXX test shows that it managed to infect the machine despite Avast!
Bravo!
Since there is no antivirus that is 100% reliable, this demonstration can be reproduced with any antivirus as long as you come across the "right" infected files.
*** My conclusion:
So if you can be kind enough to make criticisms of Avast in another way than with the sole report from Malekhal, I’m all ears.
Even if there are things I dislike about Avast, I still think that for the average user, Avast is preferable to AntiVir: in French, it filters more sources of infection, etc.
If you find free antivirus programs better than Avast, I'm all for it, sincerely!

I hope these quotes don't come from me because they are then taken out of context and exaggerated. I'm not just talking about the comparisons but about the virus section of the various help forums where a large majority were using Avast!. And having helped quite a few friends and installed another antivirus instead (and not antivir), I know that it is not as good as you say...
After saying yes but no antivirus is infallible, OK, but the goal is to recommend or not a free antivirus. For me, Avast! is not to be recommended; for others, it is effective, okay, let's discuss it, that can be interesting, but if we close the subject, if for you our opinions are useless, I find that a shame. Avoiding the debate by closing the topic and calling us "trolls"...
In short, I remain wary of Avast! which has always disappointed me in the past, I hope they improve and not just in localization, interface, and auto-configuration...
Given the number of viruses circulating on the net, it is better to recommend an AV that occasionally detects false positives than a pretty AV but poorly configured for a novice and unaware internet user.
PS: Your comparison dates back to 2007, the one from 2008 places both antiviruses at the lowest level. We also don't know what levels the tested malware are, their release dates, and how widespread they are.

Hello,
You can use antivirus, either the free version or pay for Kaspersky, that said the caution you might have behind your PC is golden, too! ;)
See you!

Good evening,
I use Kaspersky, it's good but a bit heavy. The problem is that I have the license and the activation key, but it tells me that my license is blacklisted and that it is expired.
Please, can someone give me a key? The issue is that I don't have the money to buy it or the time either.
Thank you sooo much :)

Hello everyone. Based on the experience lived by me and my acquaintances, it was limited to a disinfection for them, as for me, the computer in question is dead.
So, due to these facts, I can no longer recommend Avast. Sorry.!

Hi
NO free antivirus is a good solution against ALL types of threats!
You have Avast which handles viruses + spyware
Otherwise
AVG Free edition which handles viruses
And Avg antispyware but in demo version..
etc..
But no free option properly handles viruses + spyware + rootkits
The paid solution is Kaspersky antivirus -> 19 euros for 1 year on 2 to 3 devices! (let's say it’s a bargain)
A+

Hello,
Brice 97423, when you say: << yes but if I install 2 antivirus it will block my PC >>
No one in this topic has advised you, so far, to put 2 active antivirus programs on your PC, because let's not forget that if you intend to do so, it will create conflicts, resulting in no protection
I recommend you read this post here on the subject
Imane1306, you are not obliged to reinstall Kaspersky; there’s Antivir Classic which is free.
If you’re interested, there’s a tutorial among others here
Good luck.

It's just a piece of advice, for my part, the applicants will, of course, choose the protection that suits them best. (Aside from that, personally, I do not recommend having 2 active antivirus!!).

I'm talking [...] about the virus section of the different help forums where a large majority used Avast!
As I mentioned, counting alone isn't necessarily relevant:
- Cases where Avast was installed after infection
- Cases where Avast is installed but without firewall and security patches
- etc.
If you think our opinions are useless, I find that unfortunate
I never said that.
It's just that when I see repeated criticisms like "Avast is terrible, Antivir is good" without tangible arguments, it's annoying and doesn't help at all.
I'm not here to defend Avast.
Anyway, I'm still wary of Avast!
Everyone is free to make their own choice! No problem for me.
Some swear by AVG.
Personally, if I still used Windows enough, I would buy Kaspersky.

+1
Personally, if I still used Windows enough, I would buy Kaspersky.
With this proposition, I agree on my part if and only if there is a way, which is not the case for everyone, and I also understand that.
Then there are people who only "swear" by free antivirus programs, I can understand that, but I try to accept that after a dead PC (to talk about the worst that can happen to a PC), I cannot recommend Avast, and yet, for a time, Avast was part of my old PC, until the day I caught a virus while browsing; that day, I was disgusted, because I don't download anything illegal, etc., and that didn't stop the virus from getting in and breaking my PC, even though I had Kaspersky, Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware from time to time, etc., not to mention that my PC was obviously up to date.
Avast disappointed me this time. :-( Nevertheless, everyone is free to install their "favorite" antivirus and have their own experience; in some cases, it can be enriching.
Anyway, I remain cautious towards Avast!
+1 because of the misadventures brought up in this topic regarding it.
Thank you all for participating.

Okay, hey everyone, okay a serious topic and serious opinions...
For those who don't know me, I'm espion3004, a simple member on ccm, I did a comparison of Avast and Antivir here => Web3004
I’m not one of those big names in computing (seb, malekal, Atribune, !aur3n7 or balltrap34....)
But the comparison remains perplexing nonetheless regarding Avast 4.8?
I had Avast like everyone else, I had to throw away my laptop which is of no use anymore!
So I’m informing as best as I can about this antivirus!
Okay, then we can say that the best antivirus is the user, Kaspersky, Bit Defender, but that would be off-topic!
I did not mistreat Avast 4.8, just compared it to Antivir, my default antivirus...
Thanks for surfing

(This is not an attack!)
As I pointed out to Harakirit (who provided me the link to your test):
Antivir finds more infected files.
- But what are the infected files (it would have been good to see the list, the detected signatures)?
- You assume that Antivir's results are accurate. What if there are false positives (av-comparatives, precisely, highlights this issue in Antivir)?
"162 infected files, versus 189 for Antivir!" And what accounts for these 27 differences? Are they really infected files? It would have been good to check these files on Virustotal.com.
- Then you test downloading a Trojan with Avast... but not with Antivir.

ok, I understand that it wasn't an attack, but indeed we don't see the parallel with the files downloaded with antivirus, I will make the comparison! But I say it right away, antivirus systematically prevents the download or downloads, as I mentioned, it's a brief comparison...
The infected files are (not to name them) bombers, jokes, trojans 2 false positives smit and sdfix
You will find an example of malware zip files here =>https://www.commentcamarche.net/list
At the end of the FAQ, you will understand that I cannot mention them here or on my site to prevent the trick from being misused...

Super your explanations but nevertheless I still haven't found my antivirus because you all put me in doubt
Should I choose Avast or Antivir??? Well, since I saw that Antivir was the majority I downloaded it
(ARE YOU HAPPY ANTI-VIRUS SUPPORTERS) lol
Anyway, still a bothersome problem for me, Antivir is in ENGLISH lol and frankly, I also need to understand what is written, right??? I'm in 5th grade and I don't know everything about English, especially the names of viruses etc...
Anyway, I specify that I would like a reliable antivirus for my PC and that it is in French
Thanks to all the participants who helped me on this topic, I learned quite a lot from your discussion about Avast and Antivir (see what I mean) lol

Hello,
Here is the list of free antivirus software
http://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/logiciel 4 securite
make good use of it and especially your own experience (no matter which antivirus you choose)!.
To respond to your comments: Brice, antivirus is in English for sure, but there are very good tutorials that explain how to set it up.
Now, since everything has been said, I'm leaving this topic.
