Hello everyone I'm trying to reinstall Windows 98 on a Dell PC that I just formatted, but when I turn on the machine, it says this: strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utility. this **** phrase is preventing me from booting! Do you have any idea where this could be coming from?? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have an answer: on Dell, it's not enough to just change the boot sequence in the BIOS; you also need to check the desired device (spacebar in my BIOS) if you want your operating system to boot. The hard drive must be checked... There you go, it took me a while to figure it out... See you!

please, every time I start my computer, I always get this message (strike the F1 key to continue F2 to run the setup utility) and I would like to cancel this message in XP but I don't know how
I also have a RAM issue in the BIOS memory; I have 512 but in the computer properties, I only see 256, so what's the problem please?

For your RAM issue, it might be the graphics card that's using the other 256 MB.

You need to go into your BIOS (F2 at startup), into drive configuration, and in this order:
sata primary drive.......off
primary master drive.......hard drive
primary slave drive........off
secondary master drive.....off
secondary slave drive........cd-rom device

For your second problem, I think you have not inserted your RAM sticks properly and check if they are compatible (DDR, DDR2, DDR3).

sometimes you need the manufacturer's installation CD to install your OS
was the Windows you want to install provided with your PC?

Otherwise, is the Windows CD you put in your drive bootable?
if not => you will indeed get this message at boot

I have the Win98SE CD, but it's not the one for this PC because I've lost the other one, but it usually boots well; I've never had any problems with this CD.

Hi: you need to set your CD-ROM as boot 1.
I think you configured your IDEs incorrectly: on your boot, you don't have "unknown" on one of your IDEs, "set it to off":
primary master: HDD
primary slave: CD-ROM
secondary master: off 'or 2nd HDD if you have one'
secondary slave: off
(if it doesn't work, clear the BIOS "enter BIOS F2 + turn on the 3 LEDs "num + caps + scroll caps" + "alt f", you get a beep + "alt E" beep + "alt b" it saves and restarts. wait for the autodetection of the IDEs.)

important:
1st boot CD-ROM
2nd boot HDD
