2.5 SATA Hard Drive Connected Internally to 3.5 Tower? Solved

Question

Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to connect a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive inside a PC case to a 3.5 or 5.25 bay, since the connectors are the same, are the power voltages identical and positioned at the same place on the connectors of the drives? In short, can I directly connect my 2.5-inch SATA laptop hard drive to my central unit without using an adapter for data recovery? Thank you for your answers. Best regards Eliotbay

The SATA connectors and SATA power connectors are identical between 2.5 inches and 3.5 inches.

From a dietary standpoint, I'm not sure, so I'm not going to say yes, but it should be written on it, compare it with a 3.5-inch HDD to see if the necessary power is the same.  Otherwise, to recover your data without needing to dismantle everything and fiddle around, you just need to use a utility like Acronis Partition Suite on a bootable CD (which isn't free unfortunately) or a Linux live CD and then recover to a USB. Thank you for your answers, but I just want to know if anyone has ever tried to connect their 2.5-inch SATA hard drive from a laptop to a desktop without any special adapters. I’m just afraid that there might be too much power supplied or that the pinout is different and that the drive will burn out. P.S.: my laptop is dead. Best regards Eliotbay

Consumption is created by the drive, so there can't be overvoltage just because the power supply is more powerful. However, having never seen a 2.5" SATA drive up close, I have to rely on the sellers' catalogs, and if they don't offer a specific cable for 2.5" SATA, it's because they use the same connectors. It works perfectly, you can even install an OS on it, the PC boots perfectly, and with no speed difference compared to 3.5. Test performed with a 2.5-inch Western Digital 250 GB hard drive. See you later, have a good evening.

It works perfectly, but be careful to check if you have a 2.5-inch port in your case, generic cases usually don't have one.

There is no problem, you can connect a 2.5" hard drive in a case and even install your OS on it. With the price surge, I took a 2.5" hard drive that I had as a spare to put it in a case I got, and I installed Windows 7 on it without any issues. If you don't have a 2.5" rack in your case, you can also use adhesive Velcro and stick it somewhere in your case.

Hello everyone, I don't know if it's too late but I'm going to contribute to the discussion by saying that when it comes to laptop/desktop hard drives, I can't help you because I've never tried, but regarding SATA/IDE drives, regardless of the connections, etc... it works. Unfortunately, there is a limit, and especially, no IDE connection. But to give an example, I have a basic (office) HP Pavilion tower from 2011 and I was able to add a 2TB SATA drive in addition to the 1TB one already integrated, and then, by sacrificing the connections of the CD/DVD drive, I was able to add another 2TB drive. This gives me a total of a tower with 5TB of storage.  However, I find it a shame that there are still two possible types of HDD connections but the BIOS does not recognize them. Certainly due to a lack of power.  Hoping to have helped at least one person. Have a good day everyone.

Hello,  To configure specific software, I need to temporarily connect an IDE hard drive to a laptop that uses SATA, with a ribbon cable for example.  So: SATA => Ribbon cable => adapter/converter => IDE 2.5"  Does this exist, please? Best regards, JP
