Hello,
what are the unknown files? I can't open them. What should I do? I've encountered this several times and I can't do anything, thanks.

Unknown files are files that you cannot open because you do not have the software to open them. For example, if you do not have Word installed and are sent a Word file via email, the computer does not recognize the file format and labels it as unknown. The solution is to install the software that allows you to open that file.
To find this software, there is a function in Vista: right-click on the file, then left-click on "Open with..." at the bottom there is a hyperlink: "Search the web for the appropriate program." The link redirects you to Microsoft's website, which should tell you which software generated this file. Once you know the software, you install it and you will be able to read this file, which will no longer be unknown.
However, if the Microsoft site does not find the software, you need to search the web. You type in Exalead: "software 'file extension'". For example, for a Word file: "software '.doc'" and generally the name of the software is found in the first results.

Thank you for the speed and precision of your answer.
If I understand correctly, I will have to invest in my computer. I am still on my old XP and the response you are recommending requires VISTA.
So at Emmaus, where I go for my computer shopping, I might find something that will solve my problem or problems.
So again, thank you for waking me up. See you soon lablaive.
