Data recovery from hard drive

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and I would like to ask for your help.

I want to clarify that I'm not very skilled (or completely unskilled) in computing.

Here is my problem (I apologize if there is already a similar discussion on the forum),

While trying to change my fan, I accidentally damaged my processor or motherboard. I went to a computer hardware store to get it repaired. But the problem is that my processor and motherboard are too old, so it's impossible to repair them.

I have therefore chosen to order a new computer. The problem (and this is my real question) is that I want to recover the data from my old hard drive (namely personal data, photos, music, videos, etc.).

The technician at the store told me that I could reuse the same hard drive for my new computer, but also and especially that I should format it, thereby losing all the data on it.

So I am asking you how I should proceed to recover my data before formatting my hard drive?

Thank you, sincerely.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

    Hello,

You need to connect your hard drive as a slave to your new PC. Check your drive and set the jumper to slave if you don't know how to do it.

"Slave" signifie "esclave" en français. En informatique, un "slave" peut désigner un appareil ou un dispositif contrôlé par un autre, appelé "maître" (master). "Jumper" peut se traduire par "pont" en français. Dans le contexte électronique, c'est un petit connecteur qui permet de fermer un circuit sur une carte de circuit imprimé et ainsi de configurer des paramètres ou de changer des réglages.

Thank you very much for your help, it works now.

I connected my old hard drive as a slave to the new one. When I start the computer, I see my old hard drive with all the data on it.

After that, I just do a copy-paste of the data to my external hard drive and that's it.

    Best regards

Take a new hard drive for your new computer and connect your old one as a slave to the first.
That way you'll have access to all your files and a second internal disk :)

    Hello.
I recommend connecting your old hard drive as a slave in your new PC, so you can recover all your data and keep this second HDD for your backups (after formatting).

      Good evening,
I have a problem: I want to recover the data (photos and music) that are in my old computer tower (it's an old thing), so I changed computers and threw away all the accessories (monitor, all types of cables, keyboard, mouse), I only kept the tower.
How can I transfer all the data from the tower to my new PC?
      Thank you in advance.

If the motherboard or the processor is damaged, the data on the hard drive will not be lost.

    Krikou, hello;

what you're saying concerns hard drives that no longer work at all.

to know if this is the case, we should first connect it as a slave on another CPU and see if we can access that drive?

    I think so.

Voici la traduction de votre message : Here it is. My computer's motherboard is dead. I am using Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 on a 40GB hard drive with a single partition. Unable to boot the system from my PC (the keyboard lights up but nothing else happens: the screen remains dark, no beep is audible), I wanted to connect this drive as a master on another PC in order to recover my data. However, I am unable to launch Windows from my drive on another machine. This brings me to my first question: HOW TO START A SYSTEM THAT WAS INSTALLED ON ONE MACHINE FROM ANOTHER MACHINE? During this attempt, startup options appear below a message stating that "a problem has occurred during launch." I try the "start in command prompt in safe mode" option, but the system restarts and enters the same loop.
This method having failed, I wanted to connect my drive as a slave to another drive connected to a different machine that is functioning normally. This other drive is capable of 80GB and partitioned into two, while being managed by a single WINDOWS XP system. However, when I access my drive (which appears to me as a simple slave device of the host PC's native drive) from this new PC, I am denied access to the "USER" subfolder in the "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS" folder. No matter what I try, I cannot get through. I would like to specify that "USER" corresponds to my administrator account on my own system and that this account was password protected. I can access the "GUEST" account information with a simple click. So here is my second question: HOW TO ACCESS A FOLDER THAT WAS PROTECTED ON ANOTHER SYSTEM FROM MY SYSTEM?
I ask you to provide all the necessary details regarding this issue and I thank you in advance.
    Have a good day.
    Cyberneticien.

    Hello,

Your files are protected by "property rights" (you activate this on Windows XP Home with the confidential option, I believe, in the account properties).

On Windows XP Pro, you need to select the folder, go to its properties -> security tab -> advanced settings -> owner tab -> select your account and check "replace owner of subcontainers and objects" and then OK and apply (or on Windows XP Home, which doesn’t have this security tab, by downloading a kit to add it)

But I recommend the software R-Studio (www.r-studio.com/fr/) which is paid but comes in many different versions, including as a bootable CD... It is very powerful, it bypasses NTFS security (very useful when you have Windows XP Home) and also has a disk analysis tool to search for files...

There you go, if you have any other questions, feel free to contact me

My data is lost due to the activation of the magic partition and suddenly the power went out.

Following a refusal of the Windows software to open, I had to send my computer for repair while specifying to the repairman to preserve the data that was on the hard drive (photos, reports, etc...).

To my great disappointment, upon turning it on, I realized that the hard drive had been formatted without my data being saved.

I only have one computer, so I don't know how to set it as a slave as I read above.

I would be grateful if you could inform me if it would be possible for my computer to perform this operation on its own??? To retrieve all the deleted data.

    Thank you.

      Hello,

Your problem is different: the files have been deleted due to formatting. You should try to recover the data using software like R-Studio (paid) or PC Inspector File Recovery (free, available at https://www.01net.com/telecharger/).

The files you recover should not be saved on the disk where the data was lost: you risk further destroying them. Make sure to save them on an external drive, and (a piece of advice learned from experience) use that drive afterward to back up your files.
