Hello,
I record Canal+ shows on a hard drive (I had to pay for the HD option and the recording option), it works very well but according to C+, the recordings cannot be played on anything other than the C+ decoder. I suppose they use a dedicated file format or there is a key somewhere.
I would like to be able, on the one hand, to watch them on another TV from a DVD player.
Does anyone know how I could recover the files on my PC and convert them to DVD or Divx?
Thank you for your help

The HD + recorder option costs 10€.
Then the drive is formatted to be compatible with the platform. A hard drive in FAT32 cannot record large files (+4 gigabytes) so that's normal.
If the drive is connected to another media device, it loses all the data! It's a shame on Canal+'s part... HD is perfectly recordable via the drive and therefore transferable. The drive, however, is of inferior quality to the quality of the tuner, HD or not, due to compression.
It is currently not possible to recover data on a PC (too bad).

EDIT:
- Note that MyCanal allows access to channels directly from all platforms: https://www.canalplus.com/live/
- Furthermore, if it is about recording TV from public channels, Captvty offers to download the shows directly.
Hello,
If I try to summarize for recording the channel in HD
- either we pay 10 euros/month for the HD recording option, we buy one of the 2 hard drives provided by Canal and we can do without an HD recorder but we are completely tied to Canal and cannot retrieve our file
- or we pay 7 euros for the HD option and here I would like to be sure that if we have a living room recorder we can record (either in the classic format with a traditional recorder as is currently the case for a normal Canal subscription, or in HD if we have an HD recorder) and then view that recording on our PC or another TV with an HD DVD player.
Thanks to those who have put the 2nd solution into practice for confirming if that’s correct.

Hi
For the past 2 years, I have been recording on Canal HD. But there are several problems; if your decoder breaks down and you change it, you lose your recordings, which are only recognized by the decoder they were recorded on. And that's very annoying. Another thing, on a PC, your hard drive is recognized as empty, so it's impossible to copy. It seems that only one hard drive can be recognized. For my part, I had a full hard drive, I connected a second empty one, and then the first one could not be read; there were thumbnails, but it was impossible to play. So be careful. But for this last piece of information, maybe I made a mistake; I'll check. The other drawbacks are certain.
As for your question, when I replay my HD recording, I can copy it onto a regular DVD recorder with a hard drive using the SCART. First step, I copy it onto the hard drive of the recorder. Then I burn from this hard drive onto a DVD. It takes a long time, but it allows me to make HD animated DVDs for my son to watch in his room. Of course, we lose the benefits of HD. We keep the original in HD on the Canal Lacie DD for family shows.

Hello
little summary on the issues related to the Dual S :)
I surely forgot some points, but it's clear that CanalSat is heading in a bad direction by applying maximum profitability methods.
A subscriber to Canal+ since 1992 and CanalSat since 1996, I lack nothing to decide to switch to another operator; I've got Numericable for internet and phone, and for TV with CINÉMA CanalSat.
If I take the HD options (soon), going fully with Numericable will cost me less, with competent local customer service.
it's hard to come up with a signature ;)
little summary on the issues related to the Dual S :)
- To be able to record, you have to pay for an option (which Canal didn't specify to me even though I called them to ask why I couldn't record, impressive).
- For HD, it's an additional paid option.
- To record, you need an external hard drive; CanalSat has 2 officially compatible drives, but in fact, compatibility is not related to the drive but to the box and its controller. My noisy Antec MX1 works perfectly.
- For those using an infrared extender, be careful, a large majority are incompatible; here is the only one I found certified compatible: https://www.amazon.fr/RELAIS-TELECOMMANDE-SANS-COMPATIBLE-PILOTIME/dp/B001LXWA3U/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&m=A2F14J9F3VC0JI&s=generic&qid=1233610458&sr=1-10 (and I had to pay €15.80 for shipping for a non-compatible performant equipment returned)
- The external drive used for recording is linked to the terminal; changing terminals results in the loss of recordings.
- Once the drive is full, you can't set it aside to fill another one because the first will no longer be usable.
- The file system remains unknown to me, unusable with macOS 10.5 and Ubuntu 8.04 (some say ext2, others ext3 but it seems incoherent to me that Unix-compatible systems can't recognize this file system)
- The Dual S has many bugs and failures. Several of us find the decoder stuck at dawn, on a black screen with the message "please wait," the failures are numerous according to technicians providing this type of equipment.
- The Dual S is hard to find at authorized Canal+ sellers, with very limited stock released sporadically and randomly (according to the Canal wholesaler near me).
- You should avoid certain channels (channel 8) when using HDMI.
- For others, you shouldn't put the Dual S into standby when on a channel broadcasting HD
- Finally, I haven't yet found an HD recorder going beyond 720i/p even in MPEG4 that allows me to save (keep) my HD movies.

In fact, I think the file system (the index allowing to locate and read the files) is placed in the mediasat, and not on the hard drive. That's why it is unusable.
Maybe the files can be recovered with index reconstruction software or file recovery software for formatted disks.

I bought a WD 2TB hard drive and I can record on the cube. I currently have about 200 movies on it and it works very well. I can disconnect it and plug in the old Canal hard drive, and my data is still there. But I would like to know if there is a way to format the hard drive so that I can record on the cube and read it on any device. Thank you.
As for the C+ media set, I have no information, but I will look into it.
As for the rest, it's a standard hard drive, USB 2.0.
As soon as I have recorded a few movies, I will plug it into the PC to see what it has recorded and how it looks.
I will keep you updated.

Same for me
I connected the hard drive to the Canal Plus HD decoder.
I am recording HD movies without any issue, and I can watch them by going through channel 99.
However, it’s impossible to copy them to a DVD because when I connect the computer to the hard drive, it asks me if I want to format it (the hard drive)... in short, it doesn't see anything inside, it doesn't detect the movies I recorded.
In conclusion, CANAL+ is fine with us recording their movies through a standalone DVD recorder, but not digitally through a hard drive and then a computer.
Where’s the logic in all this?
No wonder they’re currently giving away the hard drive with the HD + recording subscription... a way to keep us captive.
The day we decide to stop with Canal, all the recordings on the hard drive will be gone! ! ! Pffffffffff

It is normal for copying to be prohibited.
Currently, digital copying, especially HD recording, is prohibited;
And it is not a commercial maneuver by Canal Sat/Plus.
The disk is formatted in a specific way with a key corresponding to the decoder.
A recorded film can only be played on the decoder that recorded it.

"unformatted disk, do you want to format it?"
So I can't even read it

Hello
thank you for your reply!!
Do you have a wanba decoder with Canal+ and recording option?
I also have a ws.digital media and a wst hard drive like yours, impossible to watch with a Canal+ decoder
I'm considering buying a Topfield HD decoder with Canal+ and recording option, I hope it works with Western Digital media for easier transport?
Thank you for your reply.

For the Topfield, you will need a PCMCIA card module to read Canal cards. If you don't need a dual tuner, take the Aston Wamba HD; just insert any card into one of the two slots. Additionally, it has a USB port at the back for updates and to connect an external hard drive for recording. Once the satellite dishes are adjusted, start the auto-detection; it will see if you are connected to an HD television or a CRT, the number of LNBs, the type of switch, the type of card, etc. Once the detection is complete, it will offer to sort the channels related to your card into a favorites list. The most important is the red button on the remote control, which, with each action, brings up a submenu (a bit like Windows) and gives you access to additional functions.
In any case, you have quite a few options here: https://www.2galli.fr/

It's normal, it doesn't mean anything.
You need to go to disk management.
But anyway, you need to use Linux for that, because the files, if I understand correctly, are in read-only attribute.
So you need to find the Canal+ videos on the HDD and set the attribute to writable, or even better, set all the attributes on the video to r-w-x.

I just wanted to clarify that it's not just the two approved hard drives that work; I have a multimedia hard drive, TVIX, and it works very well for recording HD programs from Canalsat.
Hello
I have a TVIX6500A d.d model. How do you record Canal Sat programs using the USB port or another connection?
I'm disappointed that this TNT tuner box has no subtitles!!! Fortunately, I have the PS3, which is a very powerful multimedia device!!! With the TGV play, it's not HD!!!!!
Thank you for your response.

To record Canal, the hard drive must be formatted in FAT32 type Western Digital. With the Dvico 6500A with or without TNT HD tuner, the broadcasts are recorded in NTFS. Furthermore, when it is connected via USB, it can only be managed by a PC.
Personally, I record Canal on a My Book Essential, but I do not use their decoder; it's an Aston Wamba HD with a USB port for recording in HD or SD because it "reads" the 39(SD) and 18(HD) cards from Canal.
Basically, you need to use the Dvico for TNT and music, video, etc.....

Hello. What you're saying is correct. Canalsat even jokes about not being able to play your recordings on any terminal other than the one that recorded them. That's my case since I have the MULTI+ option, so a second DUAL-S terminal, and I can't watch my videos on the second one. The moral is, if you have to exchange your terminal for any reason, make sure to copy your videos to your recorder's hard drive, otherwise everything is lost, which is not normal, especially since the terminal is far from reliable as I am already on my 3rd one since 03/01/2008. See you later.
I understood the following:
the DUAL-S decoder records a kind of bitmaps of the recordings on the HD.
If I change the external drive, then the decoder asks me to reset the new HD. Which I do.
So when I reconnect the old HD, it does not find the recordings on it because its "bitmap" is erased.
This somewhat relates to the issues encountered with two decoders.
Otherwise, I had all the trouble recovering my Western Digital HD. It was formatted in FAT 16 with two partitions!
PQ MAGIC found the disk defective with a BADMBR and Windows formatting was ineffective.
Fortunately, on the Western Digital website, there is a utility that allows you to reformat the disk to FAT32 by performing a physical format instead of a logical one and by rebuilding the MBR. However, nothing from LaCie whom I contacted (I have an HD of each).
LaCie advised me:
Try the FAT32FORMATTER software that you can find on the net, it will be able to format your disk from FAT16 to FAT32.
I will try, but I find this "appropriation" of the HD by CANAL quite "light".

Hi
I'm on Linux (Ubuntu), and I've connected the external Canalsat HDD, ... apparently they've hidden the files, I can access the HDD but I don't see much:
folder DATA (in Data PTV it's a directory but to access it you need to be root, inside there are .pict files I think they're the thumbnails
"recordn1203387510100s1203356700000p1t36_norm.pict" of the recordings (I can't open it, Linux says it's a Mac file and a file called "indxTable.bin" with attributes???
folder Lost+found (nothing but I think that's normal)
folder Video (nothing... even as root)
file: logs (empty no attributes)
So that's where my investigations stand.. since I'm not a hacker... I'm waiting for someone to provide us with a solution
IT'S SUPER SUPER ANNOYING!!!!, WE pay THE RIGHT to record on the HDD WE CAN record on a standalone DVD burner BUT NOT FROM A PC ... it's really ridiculous, I hope that some IT professionals will help us find a way to access
Thank you

Hello. For your first question, that's not quite right. You will pay €7 for the HD option and €7 for the HD recording option, which makes €14 and not €10 as you said.
For your second question, it's YES to everything.
See you later.

Just a point on pricing as I just subscribed to HD + recording
HD => 9 Euros
Recording => 7 Euros
HD + Recording => 10 Euros (package)
Otherwise, I'm exactly in the same situation to retrieve my recordings
HD compatibility: I used an external powered WD HD via USB for a few days without any issues
I am now using the Lacie 500 GB powered (I needed to recover the WD 120 GB)

To you Samesufi so that you don't think you're alone facing Transylvanian.
To you Transylvanian who could perhaps make an effort to reduce spelling mistakes.
My point, which aligns with that of Samesufi, is to denounce the practices of CANAL (+ or Sat) as well.
Samesufi gave us his privileged treatment by CANAL as an example.
As for me, a very long-time CANAL customer (even longer than that...), I was granted a three-month free trial of HD.
I contacted CANAL to find out if I could also try HD recording during this trial.
Here are the results:
1- From 14/04/2008 to 30/06/2008, free trial "3 months" of HD subject to the exchange of my decoder (40 euros, CANAL has still not sent me my exchange voucher despite a phone call and a letter that went unanswered to date)
2- I was charged 7 euros for the month of April 2008 (subscription for recording)
3- I had to buy a dedicated recording disk, the DUAL-S being delivered without a disk
4- I faced the same problems with the disk formatting, which is now in FAT16, two visible partitions under Windows, unusable, with LaCie not providing a utility to recover the disk (Western Digital provides a physical formatting utility in FAT32 that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's site)
5- My DUAL-S decoder practically resets every night, and I can rarely record a movie at night, and I have to reset my decoder in the morning (Power ON/OFF)
6- In conclusion, the free HD trial from CANAL today costs me:
40 euros for the deposit of the decoder (recoverable?....)
21 euros to test the recording
97 euros for the external LacIe disk (recoverable?)
But rest assured, CANAL has already sent me the amendment to my contract...
There you go, no matter which category some want to place me in, it's not by keeping quiet that CANAL will improve.

Hello,
I changed my HD decoder and I had a bunch of movies recorded on a Western Digital hard drive
and surprisingly, I can't play the movies on the new terminal.
After calling technical support to find out the reason, I learned that in order to comply with the law, copying is prohibited and therefore applies to movies recorded previously.
What a joke, I'm paying for a subscription with the recording option and in case of a problem, I lose access.
Canal is messing with us and all I want to say is let's pirate, at least there’s no scam there....

It is an external HDD connected directly to the C+ decoder via a USB port
(the DUAL S decoder from Canal+ has two tuners and a USB port, which allows you to record one channel in HD and another channel that you are not watching)
The problem I am facing is that I cannot read the recordings other than through the decoder.
When I connect the hard drive to my PC, I get a message saying that the disk is not formatted
See you!

Hello,
try to record the saved movie from your external hard drive by playing it through an AV input on a standalone recorder or a VCR.
It smells like copy protection in your story (they're going to lose customers).

I received this disc formatted in FAT32, the C+ manual requires formatting in FAT32, the decoder initialized it immediately without any problem.
I must say that I had to buy one of the only two hard drives approved by C+
I bought the LACIE 500 GB, but there is also a WESTERN DIGITAL 500 GB as an option.
It's surprising that there are only these two models!!
As for copying to a set-top recorder, this option is mentioned in the C+ manual, so it should work but, on the one hand, it's relatively cumbersome because you have to transfer the film you want to keep, on the other hand, I don’t have a set-top recorder and I wanted to avoid buying one. I find that a bit silly. Especially since, regarding digital files, there is presumably a solution
but it exceeds my skills.
Best regards
Renarmand

Hello
I have a 500GB Western Digital hard drive (the one recommended by C+) and a Dual-S decoder. I need to change it... Should I understand that the movies recorded on my hard drive will not be playable with the new decoder?
That's not cool at all!!!
Please reassure me...

Hello,
I'm afraid Canal + wanted to specifically prevent the reading of these files on a competing decoder or simply on a PC.
I must admit that this is really not nice at all and it will lead me to leave Canal + this year, as soon as my contract expires, even though I have been a subscriber for almost 20 years.
Best regards

I must admit that this is really not nice at all and it will lead me to leave Canal + this year, as soon as my contract expires, even though I have been a subscriber for almost 20 years.
Best regards

Hello. What you save on your external hard drive can only be read with the decoder it was recorded with; I'm in the same situation as you with the multi+ option, so two Dual-S, and I can't connect my hard drive to the second one, it doesn’t work on the computer either. So be careful if you have to change your Dual-S terminal, everything will be lost. What I do is copy the movie onto a DVD-RW with my recorder, I finalize it, and no problem. See you later.
Hello Transylvanian. For your information, I don't write for no reason, but I write from experience. I opted for the HD+ recording options in January 2008. Canalsat charged me €14/month for this subscription until 05/05/08, the date of the withdrawal which, as if by miracle, dropped to €10/month as advertised. Currently, Canalsat owes me €18 for overpayment since they didn’t even offer me the 3 free months, including the current month, contrary to their advertisement. I sent a letter to their service over a month ago and I'm still waiting for a response.
Furthermore, having the multi+ option, I am now on my 5th exchanged terminal due to malfunctions (DUAL-S) since January 2008. It's enough to be dissatisfied with Canalsat's services, especially since this terminal still doesn't work properly (very frequent resets).
See you.
