Hello,
I can no longer print. My Canon Pixma iP4300 printer is showing an error, blinking, and I can't force it to work. I'm getting the following messages:
"Some ink tanks cannot be recognized"
"An error has occurred in an ink tank. Open the printer cover and replace the ink tanks whose light is off."
I'm not going to replace a new tank, especially since this is the 4th time in a few months that this joke happens.
I haven't found an answer to my problem on the forum because every time it's about generic or refilled cartridges. For me, it's with a new cartridge or one that works fine for a few days, then nothing.
Do you know this kind of problem?
Thank you.

One day I turned on my Pixma ip4300 (which doesn't print very often), the last use was 3 weeks ago without any problems, original cartridges half full, and to my great surprise at printing I got this error message "faulty cartridge" blah blah "open and replace the one that is flashing" blah blah.. I opened the lid for the first time, the yellow was flashing so I removed it then put it back, closed it, print test, same thing, I reopened and this time all the cartridges were flashing. Ouch..
As mentioned above, I tried pressing the button with a triangle several times for 10 seconds, during which the light in front was flashing, it stopped flashing briefly then started again. I turned off and on the printer, I imagined it executed a cleaning or alignment procedure that was quite long (at least 1 min), but the external yellow light stopped flashing (didn't check the cartridge lights to avoid tempting fate because..), I restarted my print and oh miracle, it works again! Objectively I don't know if it's coincidence or the button pressed for 10 seconds (probably likely) but it's back for a long time I hope...
Honestly, semi-new cartridges that are considered defective are strange and downright frustrating. Maybe a pseudo-expiration test is performed by the printer since it's true that in my case a cartridge lasts a year.
So I hope I was clear enough to share my experience..-
Well, thank you for the tip! I was struggling for 4 days with my printer that was acting up.
At first, I bought a compatible cartridge online = no printing and messages telling me to cancel the ink level indicator, which I couldn't manage to do.
I had a Canon cartridge refilled at Cartridge (15 euros instead of 26 for the original cartridge, it's still a savings) and got the same message, with no solution. I had my son, my son-in-law, and friends help, but no one could find the solution.
I tapped away like you said in your message, and MIRACLE;;;;;; IT PRINTS!
I'm unable to repeat the process, but the main thing is that it works.
Thanks again and have a great Sunday! -

It also works on my printer (Canon i2700)!!! Thank you so much, I've struggled for a long time, I almost gave up on my printer which wouldn't work with recycled cartridges.
Original cartridges are expensive and don't last long, especially for black ink; I couldn't buy an original one every time. I think it's a bit of a scam: the printer isn't really expensive, that's true, but the cartridges are a problem! I think it's intentional that printers don't accept recycled cartridges "easily", so we're forced to buy the originals. -
Same here! Printing interrupted between 2 pages (grayscale printing) because the color cartridge was empty! (a compatible one from Carrefour that has barely been used but always indicated empty): I pressed the button with a red triangle for 10 seconds: the printing of the 2nd page started! Thank you!!!
We'll see about the rest!

I contacted Canon eagerly but they don't care, no response... for me it's going back to Epson, which is finally much cheaper, especially since I thought Canon was more durable; in fact, it's the same junk, so I might as well go for the cheaper and much better in black & white.
-
The solution is very simple; just remove the cartridge and short-circuit the terminals that make contact with the chip, then put the cartridge back and wait for the printer to be ready.

Thank you for the cancel button trick, I have a Canon MP510 with a black ink cartridge that I filled myself and no more error messages, it works great.

Hello,
I notice that many users are unaware of the steps to take with CANON printers that have individual cartridges (ip, pixma, etc...) to recognize refilled cartridges with or without chips (original, soon compatible ones with chips will be on the market....)
I have a detailed personal memorandum available for anyone interested, outlining the operations I performed after numerous tests, as well as a simple method to achieve a cartridge cost of less than 2 euros! I have developed an easy filling technique that is accessible even to women!
I regularly update it based on my "findings," the latest being from 02.03.2009; upon request, you can send me your postal address, and I will send you a few copies to share with your "canonist" friends, but useful also for "epson," "hp," "lexmark" since some suppliers of consumables offer detailed instructions for reusing cartridges with chips, sometimes requiring a small device called a "resetter" or "reprogrammer."
I am not selling anything except to suggest the purchase of a filling kit at a reduced cost for emergencies.....
Best regards

I had the same problem with my Pixma IP4500
yellow cartridge not recognized
I bought a new one, still not recognized and yet they are original and filled
I took a pencil and I played around touching the contacts of the cartridge holder.
Miracle, it works
Calling Canon is useless, as they do not cover cartridges under warranty unless they are defective, and even then there are a lot of hurdles
Legal tip:
When you have a problem with an unrecognized cartridge, tell Canon that it is the printer that refuses to recognize cartridges, not the cartridges that are unrecognized.
There’s no difference lol but you need to emphasize that you’ve bought several cartridges and that the printer won’t recognize them
because Canon is like a robot
once you start the sentence with cartridges
in their minds it goes bunpppppppppppppppppp:
cartridges--->consumables------->not covered------->don’t care.
If after that, Canon still refuses, come see me (by leaving a message in this forum), I will draft you (I am a lawyer) a formal notice under threat of legal action, which will make them react, believe me. -
I can't even do your trick Ron, and I'm still having the same problem :(
And apparently, judging by the date, no one has found a solution... -
Hello tigrijura
I have a problem with a Canon MP260. Could you please send me your memo on inkjet printers? Thank you in advance. -
Hello,
I have the same problem, a Canon cartridge that was working well, still two-thirds full... Since this afternoon, it is no longer recognized, impossible to print, the printer is stuck... I sent an email to Canon support, I'm waiting for their response... (This story of electronic chips is frustrating...) -
You had more luck than I did because the Canon support page gives me an error message. So I'm eagerly waiting for you to let me know when they respond to you.
I also tried to contact them by phone. At Canon France's headquarters, they gave me a "free international number with 13 digits". In fact, they only gave me 11 digits and anyway, as soon as I dial 00800, my Freebox tells me that this number is not accessible. I'm really unlucky!

Hello,
I now have the technique to send by e-mail (totally free!) my monochrome Canon cartridge refill memo!
Contact me at my e-mail for the two-page document to be sent today! It contains some proven tips as well as useful addresses! Spread the word, about twenty users from CCM have already thanked me!
Best regards, -

I spoke to Canon support on the phone today.
Advice: remove the cartridges and print heads, unplug for 30 minutes, replace the cartridges and print heads, plug it back in.
This didn't change anything, my black cartridge #5 is still not recognized.
However, when I take it out (it's off), it turns back on when I put it back in, but it should turn off again while the carriage goes back.
What should I do? Canon suggests I go to the repair station (200 km away from my home). They expect me to immobilize the device, pay for the trip, and the repair cost, they must be dreaming!

Good evening,
well, I have exactly the same problem with my black cartridge #8, which I remove and put back... with no result!
I see that the discussion stopped on January 22, have you found a solution since then?!
thank you in advance,
have a good evening! -
we just had the same problem
look at the numbers on the empty Canon MP140 ink cartridges: Color: CL 38 Color
Black: PG37 Black
watch out for the numbers ;) -
I have the same problem with a cartridge that I filled with ink. But when the error message appears, I open the printer's lid, replace the cartridge, and close the lid. Then I stop the task and select the Resume button, and I press the button on the printer immediately to the left of the flashing light and hold it down for at least five seconds, and usually the light goes off and then I can print. But how long the printer will be functional is a question, unfortunately, I have to repeat this regularly.
Try my trick and let me know how it goes.
I'm searching online to find a more effective and permanent solution.
Good luck, and as soon as I find something, I'll let you know. -

Same with a Pixma MP 600, mine is the original Canon yellow cartridge that is not recognized, what should I do? Change the cartridge, thanks for your replies as it's urgent, thank you.
-
It's all well and good with the new technology, the electronics are over the top, nothing beats the manual, I've always said this. It's like cars, when you're stuck, you have to go see the mechanic. It's the same here, a chip screws everything up, you're stuck, you can't even print in black and white even though I still have ink in my Canon Pixma MP600. We need to stop these stupid developments that don't work!! Make simple stuff that already works and we'll see afterwards!!
As for the question, no answer, sorry!! I'm stuck too!! "The remaining ink level cannot be detected correctly," so I've tried to replace the chip properly but nothing works, still the same.. If someone has precise and detailed information, thank you!! But I'm done with Canon, I'm going to buy another brand!! -
Hi everyone,
Yes, I also have a Pixma MP600 with unrecognized cartridges and inaccurate levels as soon as you get new cartridges!! Is that normal? To reset the chip, just hold down the cancel or reset button for at least 10 seconds and the error message will go away immediately. I bought cartridges for Canon where I had to recover the chips from the old cartridges to put them on the new ones, and that's where the chips get messed up because they recognize and register the levels of the previous cartridges, not the new ones; so either you get a chip resetter like Epson does (I don't know about Canon), or you do what I did. In any case, it works. Good luck. -
I also had a black cartridge no. 8 with the light off.
I threw away the cartridge after shaking it a bit. Apparently, it was almost empty.
I bought a compatible cartridge but without a chip.
So I need to retrieve the chip from the original.
Actually, I called Pearl, the info box where I bought the ICOLOR cartridge.
Well, I learned one thing.
I was told that once the light is off and the cartridge is empty, the chip is unusable!
Canon has thought of everything, they're clever!
So you need to change the cartridge before it's empty!
I hadn't read this on the forums yet, but it's true!
So I had to buy an original one and there were no issues.
There are also compatibles with a chip for around €8.5.
For your information, EPSON allows you to reset the chip... -
the same message for canon ip1600 as what I need to do.........................recognized cartridge.....pfffff
