What is the difference between PPPoA, PPPoE, VcMux, and LLC?

Question

Here it is...  I had a problem with my DL router modem (kortez 711) where the connection was regularly dropping (about every two days). It was configured to use PPPoA Vcmux. I changed it to PPPoE LLC. The connection hasn’t dropped - yet.  If someone could give me precise information about the difference between the PPPoA and PPPoE protocols, and between Vcmux and LLC, it would be greatly helpful.  Thanks in advance!  A future computer scientist... ^^

Hello,   what is your Internet Service Provider?  Check their website to see which encapsulation protocol they use for your subscription. It also depends on the ADSL equipment from France Télécom (the BAS) or your ISP if you are unbundled.   For example: Free generally uses PPPoA VCMUX for IP/ADSL. I just figured out where the voice chat problem on Messenger is coming from... it's because I'm connected to the internet through a port-restricted NAT NOT UpnP...  Would you happen to have a solution for me to connect with UpnP NAT?  Thanks for your help... The novice (O.)

hello,  I don't think Upnp has anything to do with it! You need to open some ports. NAT is address translation, it's doing that anyway, you just need to see how.. What is your configuration tool like? (Unfortunately, I don't know this router but there must be a way)  Good luck..  (New IT guy..)  I'll take a look and get back to you..

Thank you for your help...  My configuration tool? Well, I type the router's IP address in the address bar of IE (192.168.1.254) and then it displays a web page with the settings that can be modified. Go to this address for the Kortex 711 manual: http://www.kortex.com/kortex.com/html/support.htm and click on "manual" for the Kortex 711...  There you go thank you very much for your help! Hello everyone!  Just a quick clarification because I think I saw a detail that makes me jump...  Honestly, there is no connection between whether the modem is USB or Ethernet and the framing encapsulation!  Routers offer 'PPPOE' or 'PPPOA' or 'PPPOE or PPPOA', by the way FT is migrating to PPPOA.... be careful with FT equipment in PPPOE .............. you're going to have to change!  Catch you later!

Hi everyone.  PPPOA = PPP Over ATM, ATM being a layer 2 protocol link layer of the OSI model. It transports packets in the form of 53-byte cells.  PPPOE = PPP Over Ethernet, a protocol also known as 802.3. It's the standard for local area networks: LAN.  The difference lies in the type of packet that the router sends to the ISP over the ADSL connection, Ethernet being simpler and more reliable there are fewer problems.  Hello everyone.

Hello,  as for the PPPoA and PPPoE, all you need to do is check with your ISP; there's nothing simpler. Then you need to know if you are unbundled or not... there is absolutely no connection with the type of cable, whether it's USB or RJ45. These are 2 different encapsulations of IP or PPP in ATM LLC=multiprotocols in the same VP/VC VCMUX= one protocol per VP/VC so LLC requires the addition of a few bytes header to perform multiplexing. >> VCmux is a bit more efficient. Hello,  For those who are looking for the right settings. Here are mine: I am with Orange (formerly Wanadoo) on an 8 Mb plan. My modem is a LinkSys WAG200G release 1.00.09 (FR).  My average download speeds (10 tests per average): PPPOE LLC multiplexing = 6373 Kbs/s PPPOE VC multiplexing = xxxx (doesn't work ???). PPPOA LLC multiplexing = 5177 Kbs/s PPPOA VC multiplexing = 7808 Kbs/s (apparently the best)  I should point out that it remains quite variable, from one connection to another, sometimes I decrease or increase by 1 Mb/s.
