Crash Uncle Ernest (mTropolis - XP)

Hello,
I installed the old but still beautiful game "The Secret Album of Uncle Ernest" on my new PC with XP Home Media Center.
To run the game, I had to uninstall all versions of Quicktime and replace them with the one bundled with Ernest (version QT 2.1.2).

The game starts normally, then crashes after about 10 to 30 seconds with the following messages:
mTropolis 32-bit Windows Player has encountered a problem and needs to close, ....
AppName: mtplay95.exe
AppVer: 1.1.2.241
ModName: cvid32.qtc
ModVer: 2.1.2.59
Offset: 000228d5

The compatibility of mtplay95.exe is set for win95.
In fact, as soon as the game starts, mtplay95.exe consumes 50% of the PC's resources (dual-processor PENTIUM D915). It works more or less for a few seconds, then boom, error message

Has anyone encountered this problem or have any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Jean-Michel

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING THE ERNEST GAME TRILOGY:
The Fabulous Journey of Uncle Ernest
The Mysterious Island of Uncle Ernest
The Secret Album of Uncle Ernest
(Whose Quicktime version is not supported by Windows XP, Vista, 7)

You need to install a virtual machine. The one provided by Microsoft on their site works perfectly: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/virtual-pc-2007.aspx
“In computing, a virtual machine (abbreviated VM) is an illusion of a computer device created by emulation software. The emulation software simulates the presence of hardware and software resources such as memory, processor, hard drive, or even the operating system and drivers, allowing programs to run as if they were running on the simulated machine.” (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine)

Next, you need an operating system image. I used this one, a pre-made Windows 98 image: http://digiex.net/downloads/download-center-2-0/applications/1022-digiex-exclusive-premade-windows-98-virtual-machine-use-older-games.html
(Click on "Download Windows 98 virtual machine" and follow the instructions on the site.) However, everything is in English, so if someone finds an image in French, please indicate it in response to this post. In the meantime, I am ready to help anyone who has trouble understanding the emulator or following the English instructions...

And there you go! Just install your games on your virtual machine and you're all set!

    Hello/Good evening.

I have exactly the same problem. As a child, I played a lot of this game that I loved, and then I recently wanted to introduce it to my little cousins. Then comes the problem that we share.

I asked for help from a friend who is very skilled in computers. The answer is clear and no less logical (unfortunately): The game is too old compared to new versions of Windows or Vista.
In short, you need to buy an old clunker from 1998, give or take, to be able to play it or hope—in vain—for a reissue of the game.
Otherwise, there's nothing to be done.

It's a shame, it was such a great game.

An 18-year-old girl who would have loved to dive back into childhood ><

The game "L'Album Secret" does not need a patch to work...

During installation, do not let Quicktime search for previous versions, so you must force the installation without starting the verification of already present Quicktime files.
If the installation is successful, a window should open with the Quicktime files that have just been installed; if this window does not appear, it means that the installation was not successful.
In this case, go to the Quicktime folder located on the game CD and click on the executable, making sure not to start the verification of already installed files this time.

Then, to play, you need to set the autorun.exe located on the CD to Windows 98 compatibility mode; this applies to XP, Vista... and Windows 7!

Finally, always read the 'Readme.txt' file, which often contains essential information to get the games working.

I did as you said. No more error messages, but on the other hand, I launch the game and nothing happens.
Can you explain this to me?

      Best regards

Hello, I’m a grandfather of 60 years old and since I have grandchildren, I’ve delved into these Uncle Ernest problems on XP.
I've already installed the patch that partially resolves some issues. You can find it at the following link:
    http://ftp2.avanquest.com/...
Then, you need to modify the display settings of the video file:
For the Lost Temple, it’s the file: Macromedia Projector, located in the installation files of the Lost Temple.
Right-click on the Macromedia Projector file. Properties. Compatibility. Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98. Optionally set the display to 256 colors and the screen resolution to 640*480. Click apply and OK.
Restart the game, which should work again for the pleasure of both little ones and adults!

I think for the version with "QuickTime" it should be the same!

      Hello,
I've tried putting it in compatibility mode 95 or 98, but the game still crashes on startup (displays an error report) :(
If someone could find a patch for THE SECRET ALBUM and not The Mysterious Island or The Fabulous Journey, that would be really great ^^
Thank you very much to everyone who invests their time for the "no-lifes" of Uncle Ernest :D

I'm also using Bidule Projector, but (I'm an idiot) where can we find the installation file? It's not Lost Temple, but it should work anyway.

I am the cursed statuette; I could play it, and now it asks me to install QuickTime 6 (that's fine)
but every time I start the game, it's Macromedia Projector that has a problem, I'm desperate
the game was so good, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, it's frustrating.

Hello, I just read your message and I find some relief in it; I thought it was my computer that wouldn't accept it. You will, I think, understand that I have the same issue as you and have not yet resolved the problem because I can't find anyone to do it. Good luck to you.

    Hello!

Not bad at computing, I spent two days trying to install The Amazing Journey and The Mysterious Island on XP, Vista, and 7 by changing all types of settings, patches...

NOTHING WORKS! These games are too old for post-2000 technologies.

"Long story short", the only solution is to buy an old PC with Windows 98.
Even installing Windows 98 on a "new PC" wouldn't be enough because the machine (too powerful, too modern) is incompatible with Windows 98 or earlier versions.

    Best regards,

    Victor

    Hello,

The BrunX solution works very well for The Fabulous Journey! Thank you very much, I had been trying to play it again for a while. I just prevented QuickTime from searching for other versions and I have no issues.

    Thank you so much!

      Hello,
I'm sorry, BrunX's solution might work under XP but not under Vista!
Under XP, to get the secret album of Uncle Ernest bought under Windows 98 to work, I had to buy another version of the game compatible with XP for a moderate price. There might have been another way to do it, but she claimed it was the only solution. So on an old computer with XP, these games still work if they're compatible with XP, but they no longer work on Vista (can't type a name on the keyboard!).

    Bonjour,

I have a computer equipped with Vista and cannot install Uncle Ernest's secret album for my daughter.

Could you explain, in a very simple way, how you managed to do it?

Thank you very much in advance.
