Remplacer modem routeur par livebox

Solved

Hello,

We have 2 PCs, one desktop and one laptop, connected to a Livebox: the desktop is wired via Ethernet, the laptop via Wi-Fi.
The big issue is that the laptop often has a poor connection, or even no connection at all; however, it always says "signal strength: excellent." I'm wondering if the desktop is "draining" all the bandwidth thanks to its Ethernet cable!

After resetting the Livebox, formatting the laptop, and checking all connections, with no results, we are considering throwing the Livebox out the window and replacing it with a router modem to which we would connect both computers via Ethernet.

Is that possible?
Is it advisable?
Is it easy?
What would be the best router modem in our situation?

A thousand thanks to anyone who can help us out of this mess!
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.11

    Hello,

    is it possible

it's not desirable unless you have money to spend for nothing (at that point, I can send you a bank account number!)

it's not very complicated but that is relative to your knowledge of computers

the best router in this case is: a Livebox!!

I think the issue comes more from the Wi-Fi "receiver".

is it integrated into the laptop?

is it a USB key? if so, do you have USB2 ports?

    what is your ADSL speed?

lots of questions without answers, let's focus on the laptop, the problem probably comes from there.

      Hello FullScrenn,

You say that replacing the Livebox with a modem router is possible...

Personally, I have an ALICEBOX and I would like to do it, but HOW? lol

Actually, I bought a used Lynksys modem/router (to take abroad) and I just want to test it before leaving France.... I want to avoid taking on unnecessary baggage.

Over there, it is supposed to replace a simple Sagem Fast 800 modem... I was told that it shouldn't be a problem...

If you could help me, I don't know much about it... And I wouldn't want to mess things up here by reconnecting my Alice modem.

      Best regards

      Sofia

    Routers have several RJ45 ports.
On the Livebox, you have two.

    Hello,

It's possible, unless you have the ADSL phone (VoIP). In that case, you need to keep the Livebox.
But between us, if it's a Wi-Fi issue, there's no need to change the router.
Use a switch or better yet, powerline adapters; the latter solution is the best, I think.

Thank you both for your initial responses.
So I need to provide some clarifications!

My knowledge of computer science ranges from "excellent" in some areas to "not great" in others, like networks lol.

I don't think the problem lies with my laptop, which is recent and "refurbished" last weekend.
I'm "blaming" the Livebox because, with the same laptop, at my workplace, I connect and browse quickly and without issues via wifi, with an "Orange" network where the Livebox has been replaced by a modem router.
Yet, over there, my computer indicates "signal strength: very weak"!

I do not receive phone or television services through the Livebox. It only provides me with internet.

My idea is not to replace the Livebox with a modem router for wifi use, but to connect both PCs with Ethernet cables and thus free myself from a somewhat erratic signal!
Additionally, I find the Livebox bulky, ugly, and a bit too "branded" lol.
This is where my IT knowledge "bugs": does a modem router have multiple RJ45 cable outputs?
And if so, which are the simplest and/or most reliable devices of this type to set up?

I hope I have provided enough information.
    Thank you in advance.

I had been told that the other "hole" on the Livebox was mainly not to connect a second PC... It seems I shouldn't have trusted "THEM" lol

I put the thingamajig in the doohickey and it works!

    Bern, thank you so much!!!

    Hello!
You can set up the second port of your Livebox for a second computer; I did it for a certain time.
Now, I have a router connected to the Livebox, allowing me to connect up to 4 computers via network cable, and the Wi-Fi is still well provided by the box, which we connect to regularly.
Tutorials are easy to find "Livebox setup" via G..., for example!
