Indeed, you cannot use a video as it is as a screensaver; you need to obtain a file with the ".scr" extension in order to use it as a screensaver.

To begin, download the software "Audio/Video To Exe":

Install it and launch the application. Choose a video located on your hard drive (for example, a clip of your favorite singer) and convert it.

There you go, your video clip.wmv has become clip.exe.

Now rename this file to .scr like this: clip.scr

Now go to the Windows > System32 folder
Place your clip.scr file there

Right-click on that file, then choose "Install".

And there you have it, your favorite singer's clip serves as a screensaver and the music plays too.
So cool!

Good evening, you cannot set a video as a screensaver because screensavers are a program or rather an animation. I think there are programs to create screensavers, but I don't know any personally. I just know that you can set your photos to scroll as a screensaver by choosing my photo album from the list.

If you don't have anything in your dropdown menu, it's because you haven't properly converted your video to a .exe file, then to a .scr file, and then installed it in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

I have the same problem as guigs2, I converted the file to Exe then I added .scr at the end of the file name (which seems to not change the file format).
I put it in system 32 (should it be placed in a special folder in system 32?) but the file is not in the list of screensavers.

Did you manage to find guigs2?

No, it appears in C:\windows\system32 with the .scr extension and when we see it in system 32, it appears in the screensaver window.

Yes, I've done all of that and it works... but in a small window because it's impossible to get "settings" in the screensaver window where the file with the .scr extension appears correctly.

It would be nearly perfect if we could set up the playback of the file through the screensaver..

Any idea?

PS For those who have problems with "install", I specify that, once the .scr file is pasted into Windows/system32, you just need to find it in the large window on the right (in alphabetical order) then right-click on it and left-click on Install.. There you go.

And YES... It really does seem to be THE problem with this protocol!!! There is no way to set the display, because when you click on "set", the viewing window opens (the option interferes with the setting option..) and shows the video, but does not offer any settings....

Moreover, at the end of the video, it freezes and to close it, you have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del...
.... and there is very frequently an error message "ffplay.exe has stopped working", this software being the video player..

As already explained, the Purple Digital solution does not work properly (see the posts above...) and Video Screen Saver, which is from 2004, is certainly not compatible with Vista and is not presented as such... Some sites no longer distribute it...  Please reread the entire topic to follow the discussion from the beginning... Thank you;

THANK YOU DAK !!!!  I finally managed to download  this freebie!!  I had been to this site several times, but I hadn't noticed that the download button for VSS was at the top of the download page (this site is really poorly designed... by the way, it's been abandoned since 2004).  I installed it without any problems by following the instructions given by the software and it works perfectly!! Just remember, at the end of the VSS configuration, to first press the "Apply" button before OK!! Otherwise, you'll have to start all over...  For Vista, remember that - after pasting the .exe  file into Windows /system 32 - you need to open the Control Panel, then click on "Personalization", then on "Screen Saver", and in the small "screen saver" window, make "Video Screen Saver" appear, then click on the Settings button to specify in "Chosen Sequence List" the path of the video file you want to display.  After specifying the delay for the video to appear, and after clicking on Apply, you can exit by clicking OK.  I am very happy!!  Thanks again.   See you later!
