battery connected but not charging Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,

I just bought a HP PAVILION DV6000 laptop with Vista.

The problem is that I plug in the battery but it doesn't charge; it says plugged in, not charging.

I saw on a forum that someone had the same issue and that they updated the BIOS and now it works fine;

I've never done a BIOS update and I don't want to mess up my laptop.

I also don't want to return my laptop as it took me 2 months to receive it instead of one week.

Hello everyone!!!   I had the same problem as everyone else on this forum, and I think I have solved the issue. I have an HP 6000 and the battery wasn't charging anymore. So, I removed the battery while keeping the power cord plugged in and the PC on. I waited for the small icon at the bottom right of the Vista desktop to show me that the battery was no longer there. Then, I put the battery back in its place, still with the PC on, and miracle of miracles, when I hover over the icon at the bottom right it shows me "plugged in, charging." Hello, I don't understand why you don't want to flash your machine's BIOS, it won't affect your hard drive and it won't crash your computer, it will just fix the problem if there's an issue with power management on the motherboard, so go ahead and do it.

I had this problem with an HP Pavilion dv 9660ef. I too turned my computer on and removed the battery. I waited 5 minutes, then I put the battery back in place (computer still on) and it started charging again. Not difficult to do.

Hello everyone!  The "not charging" issue has appeared on my computer, a Lenovo T61 running Vista Pro. I read your discussions, and I believe the solution is neither to be found in the BIOS nor in the motherboard. To me, it's Vista's power management that's messing things up, because if I'm not mistaken, no XP systems are affected. So, as often with Windows, it's going to require (a lot of) patience and some personal tweaks (unplugging and replugging the battery...) It's a matter of computer stability; if there were a loose connection, analyzing the charge level would be impossible...  Good luck to everyone!

I tried removing the battery and putting it back without turning off the PC, the battery charged for 15 seconds and then it went back to "plugged in, not charging."  I have a Lenovo and I updated the BIOS.  If anyone has another solution?

I can’t see the battery icon at the bottom right anymore??? How can I get it back?  On my Inspiron 6000, the computer shuts down immediately when I unplug the charger... I think the battery isn’t charging anymore. At the same time, the battery widget tells me it’s charged to 89 percent... Any ideas?

Hello,I have an HP ZV6000 pavilion, it's not very young, 3 years old.It's all in the troubleshooting system, but effective. Since this morning, my battery "was impossible to charge."Now it's charging, but still no info on the battery type or the charge percentage. I'll leave it and see. When you look at the price of batteries, plus a charger (because I had the shielding of the charging cable cut at the charging port, which I repaired).But since this charging issue, (actually I thought I was on AC power and I was on battery, and sometimes the cable made contact and charged the battery) and once the problem was fixed, it charged a maximum of 78% and indicated end of charge (no more charging light).

Hi, I had the same problem as you, and I searched for solutions on a million forums, I tried everything, nothing worked. Finally, I called my computer company (Dell). The technical support told me to try some things and they ended up sending me a new cable for FREE (if I sent back the old one). And the problems were solved!

The battery only starts to charge when below the 95% threshold in order to avoid stressing it too often. It's a way to extend its lifespan a bit longer. I don't know if all laptops are affected, but that's the case for mine, an Asus X73SL. Regards.

Good evening,  I have a Dell Vostro 1500 that works very well, but it is now two and a half years old, and the battery is gradually dying. In fact, I found the drop in performance too abrupt to be "natural" (a 50% loss of autonomy overnight or almost, and a friend who has the Vostro 1700 bought at the same time had the same surprise...).  But the problem that bothers me the most is different, because for about a week now, the battery indicator is flashing orange, and the battery doesn't charge to 100% under Windows (7)... I tried the suggested technique, removing the battery while running.. it didn’t change anything... I'm starting to worry, as each day the percentage reached is decreasing... it was at 92% this morning, now it's at 82% :s Apparently my charger works well, tested on other similar Dell laptops.  If anyone has another idea, I’m all ears...  Thanks in advance!

Personally, I had the same problem; the PC told me that the battery was connected but not charging. I just removed the battery and put it back in place, and the problem was solved. There you go! ;)

1. Disconnect the battery, with the PC powered on and plugged in. 2. The PC will turn off, restart it. 3. Check that there is a red cross at the battery connection point. 4. Reinsert the battery in its place. 5. If the PC turns off, restart it and you're good to go.  I just did it following soyooz's advice.  Mastfon

Here it is, I have a new cable because the other one was broken, so I have a new one. My battery is at 0% even if the cable is plugged in, it says: plugged in, not charging. When I remove the battery but the cable is still connected, nothing happens, but when I put the battery in and remove the cable, the computer turns off. Hi, I had the same problem as you, battery on the laptop, power connected and it said "on AC power," but I couldn't change the battery. I have a Dell Vostro 1720 running XP SP3, I tried connecting it with my girlfriend's Dell Studio 17 under Vista and it works. So the problem is with the charger, not the battery (for me). Good luck.

Hi,  What worked for me (Alienware M17x, Win7) is, while the laptop is running, to unplug the power supply, remove the battery, and then press the power button for 10-15 seconds.  Then you plug the power supply back in and restart.  By the way, this was recommended to me by Alienware support... and it works!!!

I have an answer that could help a lot of people.  I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 running Vista, my problem was that I had plugged my PC into the power supply (with the battery) and the battery notification displayed (plugged in, not charging). I checked the status of my battery in (Control Panel, Power Options, Battery Meter) and it showed "Inactive". I then contacted Dell's technical support and here's what they told me to do:   1. Shut down your computer normally (Start, Shut Down) 2. Remove the battery from the computer and unplug the charger. 3. Press and hold the power button for 20 to 25 seconds. (To completely drain the computer). 4. Reinsert your battery, then reconnect your charger. 5. Turn on your computer normally. 6. The problem is solved;)

Hello,  I bought the same PC as you, and I had the same problem. At first, I went to look online, but I didn't see anything. Since I was using the computer on my bed, I thought my battery was overheating. So I didn't unplug it, I removed the battery, waited for the battery to cool down a bit (it was burning hot), and then I put it back in. Since then, it charges. Hi,  I have a Sony Vaio that I just bought a few days ago and I had exactly the same problem. My charge stops at 80%. On Windows 7, I think it's just a matter of settings.  For Sony users:  Go to the Vaio Control Center, Power Management and uncheck the box to enable battery maintenance function.  For other brands, on Windows 7, there should be a control center for the computer.  Good luck !!

I eventually found the instability of the charging system: it's the battery temperature that is to blame. You're running on battery power; it's quite hot. You reconnect the charger, and Vista prevents charging. It's annoying because the laptop remains powered by the battery, and it can't cool down until... it shuts off completely! The solution, mentioned several times: let the battery COOL DOWN by removing it for 5 minutes, for example.

I had the same problem with my HP Compaq 6710b running Windows 7, which I resolved: - The first time, I just had to turn off the computer, remove the battery, and reinsert it. - The second time, this didn't work, and I read here that the laptop only charges from 95%, so I unplugged the charger, went below that, and reinserted the charger, and it worked.

On my side, I tried everything that was written in the various blogs/forums. The laptop (Toshiba Satellite with Vista OS) only charged when it was turned off. The power supply was giving its 19 volts, but there was a small notch on the connector that I thought was insignificant. I tried another power supply from a friend and it started charging immediately even while in use. I ordered another power supply on EBAY for $6 and everything is fine now...

This comes from your computer's somewhat old battery. It is dead, so an immediate connection must be made at each startup. You then need to change the battery, which is quite expensive :'(.  Good luck everyone

I had the same issue with an Acer Aspire 7741ZG running Vista. Here is the solution that worked for me found on this forum  1. Turn off your computer normally (Start, Shut Down) 2. Remove the battery from the computer and unplug the charger. 3. Press and hold the power button for 20 to 25 seconds. 4. Reinsert your battery, then plug your charger back in. 5. Turn on your computer normally. 6. The problem is solved ;)  And there you go, the charging resumed... Luckily because there was only 4% left  Good luck to those who will also have the problem.

Hello, I also had this message 'Plugged in, not charging' on a Dell Inspiron 1545 with the battery gradually dropping to 5%. From time to time, the power indicator on the laptop would change from 'white' when plugged in to 'orange' when on battery, which clearly indicated a loose connection in the power cable. By fiddling with 'the wire,' the connection would be restored, and the laptop would work on AC power, but it wasn't stable at all. After repeatedly trying by gently manipulating the cable 'the 15 cm before the plug,' nothing worked anymore, no more power from the AC and the battery was too weak to use the laptop. Without hesitation, I took a utility knife and carefully and neatly cut the black casing surrounding the three wires 'one blue, one brown of the same diameter and wider than the last black one which was thin'  one wire held, the others were cut but directly opposite each other in the casing, causing the loose connections. I stripped everything, tinned, and resoldered, reinforced the casing, and since then, no more loose connections, and my battery has charged to 100%, and everything is holding up well.  that's my final experience, I had tried 'BIOS resets' and other stuff before.

Check your power cables or if they are not too old, the issue may come from the battery that no longer charges and doesn't hold a charge anymore (it happened to me, I changed my battery) and since then it's been working perfectly.

It's strange, but it resembles the power management issues on MacBook Pro. I would be tempted to say that it's a problem specific to Intel machines because I have a LENOVO laptop that had this issue. Following the reset procedure worked (the laptop was new and could only run on mains power, it's unlikely the battery gave out so soon). On Mac, it does the same thing; sometimes the battery doesn't charge, and you have to reset the PRAM (or whatever it's called) with power on startup and I can't remember which key.  Is there possibly a bug in the Intel chipsets by any chance???

I don't know if this will help you, but I had the same problem on an Acer  you turn on your computer on mains power, then unplug it and turn it off, remove the battery, and press the power button for 30 seconds or more, then put the battery back in, plug it back into the mains, and turn your computer back on; normally, you will have the charging indicator back on.

I had the same problem last night: I unplugged everything and turned off my computer  then the next day it was the same thing, so I unplugged, replugged, etc... then I let my charger rest for about an hour and then I started doing a bit of anything *-* (removing the battery, putting it back, trying another outlet, unplugging everything, you get the idea) and poof, it works again :D and I also have a Packard Bell 17" (EasyNote LM) by the way there is no "On/Off" button on the battery or anything like that, anyway I hope I've helped you ;)
