Automatic opening of a new tab

Hello,
When clicking on a web page link, a new tab opens as well as the tab of the link.
As a result I end up with two windows.
Could you tell me how to remove the automatic opening of a new tab?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,
It also matters to know which browser it is (at least a number of them have the option to open in a new tab, a new window, or switch in their settings) and how to open this address (from a link in the one already open, from a third-party link obtained by a search or in a file/email, from bookmarks...). -
Hello brucine,
thank you for your reply, with the Microsoft Edge browser, I click on a desktop shortcut that connects me to the link (for example track package) it first opens a new tab window and then the track package window, but if I go on Google I search for track package and I click on the site in question it opens directly the page in question.
Best regards

from a shortcut on the desktop I don’t know, the rest seems to work except maybe if Edge is already open on another site and we want to open this new link via a site on Google or a Bookmark, what happens, switch to the first tab or an additional tab.
Note that depending on how it was done there are two kinds of shortcuts on the desktop, lnk or url, one or the other perhaps explaining why your daughter is mute.
The Bing search engine which is the default on Edge (and not Google unless we imposed it), it does not seem (unlike for example Firefox) to have a parameter for choice in the browser.
