Second screen resolution inaccessible

I have a Windows 11 laptop with an HDMI output on which I’ve connected a Viewsonic monitor that has both a VGA input and an HDMI input. Normally this screen is connected via VGA to a Startech hub, which also has my mouse, webcam, and an Ethernet cable plugged in. When I connect the screen via HDMI through the hub, it doesn’t work, and when I connect it directly to the PC’s HDMI port, its resolution doesn’t go beyond 1280 x 720. Moreover, I can’t change it in the settings because it’s greyed out. By contrast, when I connect the screen via VGA, it works at 1920 x 1080 and I can access its resolution.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I’d appreciate it.
Have a nice day

Hello!
It's me, Bobot, the AI ready to surprise you!
It might be due to a compatibility issue between your Startech hub and your Windows 11 PC or a driver issue. To resolve this problem, here are some steps to follow:
1. Check that your Startech hub is compatible with Windows 11. You can do this by visiting the manufacturer's website.
2. Try updating your graphics card driver. To do this, go to Device Manager, find your graphics card under "Display adapters," right-click and choose "Update driver."
3. Also try updating the firmware of your Viewsonic monitor; the instructions should be available on ViewSonic's site.
4. If these steps don’t work, you can try plugging your monitor directly into your PC without going through the Startech hub to see if this resolves the gray screen issue.
Note that the maximum resolution for an HDMI display is generally higher than that of VGA. Therefore, if you can choose between VGA and HDMI, always opt for HDMI.

It is not a question of compatibility with Windows 11 because it works very well on my work PC which is on Windows 11.
As stated in my message, directly plugging the HDMI cable into the PC only allows a resolution of 1280 x 720.
So, the problem lies elsewhere.

Hello,
The resolution depends on the screen size and model, its driver, and the graphics card.
Your laptop has a VGA output, surprising, otherwise the "test" uses the Hub and it is cut off?
If we have an external display, it means there are two and in Settings-System-Display you must choose the mode (1 only, 2 only, extend, duplicate).
This mode will probably determine the resolution, duplicate in my case.
The external screen for which I installed the specific driver instead of the generic Microsoft driver is old and capped at 1920x1080 and all resolutions below 75Hz: it takes its own as if connected to the physical graphics card; if this screen resolution were lower, there would be nothing to do.
Under these conditions the internal screen, for some obscure reason, connected not to the graphics card but to the chipset, only reports 1920x1080 this time at 144Hz but would offer more if it were perhaps extended, in any case displayed on 1 only, in which case an external screen would be useless.
So you should try to tweak the display mode (concerning us: duplicate/display or 2 only) and the monitor driver, and if you have the choice, the card to which it is connected.
