If you want to save emails (and thus be able to read and use them) without going through mail.yahoo.com, you need to use an email client.
One of the most practical and popular ones is Thunderbird, which can be downloaded here:

It's free. (After downloading, close the page for donations).
Then you will set up your Yahoo account in Thunderbird. Let Thunderbird handle the configuration. If prompted, choose the IMAP protocol for receiving emails.

After that, you can store your emails in a local folder in Thunderbird.
To read the emails, you must use Thunderbird.
Another solution is to save each email as a .eml file. This file can be read by any email client (not just Thunderbird).
I won't provide the details here. It's quite lengthy and I don't know exactly what you want to do.
