Hello,
There are indeed 2 versions of Minecraft:
- Java Edition
- Bedrock Edition
It's been ages since I last played this game, so the information below is what I found in terms of differences after a brief search:
1. Available platforms:
- Java Edition:
Available only on PC (Windows, macOS, Linux). - Bedrock Edition:
Available on multiple platforms: Windows 10/11, consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch), mobile devices (iOS, Android), and even VR.
2. Performance and optimization:
- Java Edition:
Less optimized, it may require a more powerful computer for good graphics rendering and a smooth experience. However, it offers more customization through mods. - Bedrock Edition:
Designed to run on a wide range of devices, it is better optimized, with faster loading times and overall superior performance.
3. Multiplayer:
- Java Edition:
Multiplayer servers are often community-managed. Players can join third-party servers for free, but versions must match exactly. - Bedrock Edition:
Offers integrated access to Realms (paid private servers managed by Mojang). It also allows cross-play between all Bedrock platforms, which is great if your friends play on different devices.
4. Mods and customization:
- Java Edition:
Excellent support for mods, resource packs, and datapacks. It is the preferred version for players who enjoy customizing their gaming experience. - Bedrock Edition:
Has a Marketplace to buy skins, textures, and maps, but mods are much more limited.
5. Redstone and technical gameplay:
- Java Edition:
The behavior of redstone and other technical mechanisms (like pistons) is more complex and precise, making it the favored version among Minecraft engineers. - Bedrock Edition:
More simplified in certain technical mechanisms, which may limit very advanced creations.
6. Graphics and ray tracing:
- Java Edition:
Supports shaders through mods, allowing for significant improvements in graphics. - Bedrock Edition:
Includes native support for ray tracing (on compatible hardware such as NVIDIA RTX graphics cards), offering impressive graphics without the need for mods.
7. Community and content:
- Java Edition:
Strong PC gamer community focused on mods, custom servers, and eSports competitions. - Bedrock Edition:
More accessible to a broad audience, especially young players on consoles and mobile devices.
In summary:
- Java Edition is ideal for players seeking deep customization, mods, and a rich technical experience.
- Bedrock Edition is perfect for those who prioritize cross-play, performance, and simplicity, or who play on multiple devices.
Hello, regarding the Nintendo Switch, there is currently only one version of Minecraft, which is Minecraft Bedrock.
On the packaging, this game is simply called "Minecraft". It allows for cross-play network gaming, meaning you can also play multiplayer with Minecraft Bedrock players on other consoles/mobile/PC.
There are two different covers where it just says "Minecraft", but they contain the same game. These covers also specify that the "Super Mario Mash-Up" pack is included.
Note: there is an older version from 2017 titled "Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition" which is no longer for sale. Those who had this edition were able to download Minecraft Bedrock for free on Switch.
There are also spin-off games like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends, but these are different games; they are not the Minecraft game.
